[sig.

A2r] dise Archidoxa in 10.

[sig. A8v] Der Allmächtig gütig Gott verleihe E[uer] Rö[mischen] K[eyserliche] M[ajestä]t langwirige Gsundheyt/ Gnad/ Weißheyt/ vnd Verstand/ daß sie frid/ ruh/ vnd eynigkeyt im heyligen Röm[ischen] Reich/ zu dem Lob Gottes/ vnd der armen Christen nutz vnd heyl gnädigst befürdern/ anrichten vnnd erhalten möge.   Geben zu Straßburg den 28. To the most illustrious, powerful, and invincible prince and lord, Lord Maximilian II, Roman Emperor of Hungary and Bohemia, Archduke of Austria, Count of Tyrol, my most gracious lord.

Most illustrious, powerful, and invincible Roman Emperor, my most gracious lord: Among all the Theophrastian books, the Archidoxa, in particular, has been eagerly sought after by many, even by those who are not inclined towards medicine. Yet, Theophrastus has encountered more mockery than progress from those who do not appreciate the field. Therefore, I did not want to delay any longer and instead wanted to publish it publicly.

Although I had shared the belief with others that such high arcana of this ungrateful world should not yet be revealed, it is apparent that the contradiction is happening daily. Thus, it can be inferred that God, who has ignited the light of medicine through Theophrastus Paracelsus, does not want it to remain in the darkness for much longer.

However, my intention with this publication is solely for the common good and to serve all those with a kind heart. I am not seeking my own honor, but that of Theophrastus, so that his teachings may come to light. Nevertheless, I know well that I will receive little gratitude from many, but I should not think little of it because of love. Some may be angry with me for not keeping these books hidden any longer, but it is true that when something becomes common, it soon falls into contempt, and out of contempt comes forgetfulness and misuse, which can cause harm to both high and low-ranking persons, especially in medicine.

Secondly, it is also true that many people show great ingratitude towards God for his gifts. However, since God surpasses us with his grace and does not let our ingratitude discourage him, but rather shows his blessings more in medicine than before, why should we oppose his gracious will? For he renewed medicine, along with all of philosophy, through Theophrastus, not to hide it, but to reveal it to the whole world, just as it was in the time of our ancient father Adam and other times. Indeed, Theophrastus had already indicated in the Paracelsian that his monarchy would remain, but not that of the medicorum, and that he would judge the latter more after his death than before.

But if his monarchy were not to come to light, what would remain after his death? In his work Tinctura Physicorum, he also states that the medici should consider carefully and not dismiss as insignificant that his theory, which arises from the light of nature and can never be wrong due to its constancy, will begin to flourish in the year 58 and that the practice that follows will demonstrate wonders and incredible signs, even understood by craftsmen and the common people, how Theophrastus' art stands against the sophistry of the alchemists.

Thirdly, there are many honest and sincere people, both rich and poor, who are in great bodily distress and burdened with pitiful illnesses, and help and advice cannot be denied to them without violating love.

In conclusion, I am moved by the saying of Johann Liechtenberger, who writes at the beginning of his prophecy: "He who digs out his own gold according to his desire and does not abuse it, nor deals with foreign things, does no wrong to anyone. But he who conceals art and books does wrong to everyone, for he does not hide his own things but draws under other people's things and steals them." Therefore, may God grant those who love and cultivate the art to live and thrive, and thus awaken them from death. All those with a kind heart who have Theophrastus' books before them should consider this saying and know that although the Archidoxa, Tinctura Physicorum, and the like have been publicly printed, they will still remain with the lovers of the art and will not be common.

The other part [of people] will be full of joy and first thank me for the hope that they have all the art and secrets of nature together and will become rich and happy with them. But when they start working and, after much reading, effort, and cost, find nothing (as will happen to many who stumble upon these books with untrained hands), then the slandering, cursing, and condemning will begin, and poor Theophrastus will have to bear the blame as if he had hidden the truth. I ask those people to consider that Theophrastus speaks as the Cabalists and natural magicians do, not always understanding what the letter indicates, and he wants disciples who are experienced in the arts he presents in the Paracelsian. Therefore, he writes in the first book of the Archidoxa that he wants to talk with his own in these books, not in the common language of the people, but write intelligently enough for his own and close with a good wall. Hence, whoever knows nothing about these arts will achieve little fruit in Theophrastus' secrets since he does not understand what he should do or not, whether to take white or black. He will prove even less if he has not experienced the work. When Theophrastus writes de modo administrandi medicamenta, he also says that one should not take the body in herbs, let alone in minerals and metals, because the power, virtue, and all efficacy lie in essences, magisteria, arcana, and elixirs, not in the body, as experience shows.

Some people rave and scream that Theophrastus did not faithfully reveal the right foundation, but concealed it with veiled words so that no one could understand his teaching, causing many harms to the sick, and they would like to make him a murderer by doing so. This is unchristian of them. They should consider how much good Theophrastus accomplished and wrote, not only in surgery for wounds, open injuries, and French disease, which no one had done before him, and all of which the diligent can understand well, but also in many physical diseases, for which he deserves more praise than blame, and not to be condemned so unfairly.

However, it cannot be held against him by any impartial person that he brought back somewhat obscurely the secrets and mysteries of nature as they were in use among the ancient fathers, Jews, and heathens to maintain their long life and bodily health, so that not every farmer could understand them, but only the worthy ones who are skilled in magic, since the medics themselves at his time were guilty of obstructing his publication, poisoning him, and pursuing him to death, and they would not be shown otherwise, but remained stubbornly on their fiddles.

Furthermore, he should have described all the secrets of nature in such a way that they would be revealed to everyone. Where are the medics now? What would be their reputation among great potentates, princes, and lords if every idiot as well as every medic knew the secrets of nature? That they are not known in common among medics even in our times is not surprising, for they behave just like their ancestors. Some despise the truth, others are too pompous, others are too greedy, and the lazy ones do not want to get their hands dirty. But those who have the desire and are not ashamed to learn, who seek and persist, will soon be released by the one who is the truth and the light, from the darkness and human fictions.

Such high gifts are not given by God to everyone. When Christ speaks to the people in parables and his disciples ask him about their meaning, he says to them, "To you it has been given to know the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables." But Christ did not only desire to save the apostles, but also the poor masses, yet he hid the secret from the ungrateful Pharisees and scribes and explained it only to his own. All Christians know that our salvation (which is greater than bodily health) depends solely on Christ, of whom the entire holy scripture testifies that he is the light, the way, and the truth. And yet the holy scripture is so deep that all heretics have drawn their false opinions from it and used it to shield themselves. Shall the Holy Spirit therefore be blasphemed or considered a master of heretics? How do the prophets speak, John in the Apocalypse and Paul in his Epistles? Do not all theologians have enough to do with them? Peter says that Paul speaks of some things in his letters that are difficult to understand, which confuse the unlearned and the frivolous, as well as the other scriptures, to their own damnation. If a Christian cannot rebuke or should not rebuke the prophets, John, or Paul for writing obscurely, why should one curse Theophrastus for hiding his secrets, which are incomparable to salvation, from idiots and unworthy people? He is not the first to have employed this modum docendi; many have written about the secrets of nature in such a way that they have remained hidden from the public to this day, which was God's will. In my opinion, we lack the desire to study true astronomy and philosophy, which reveal everything in nature. I wanted to remind the inexperienced and even the doctors to think about this.

As far as these books are concerned, the argument of all three is clear from the inscription. In Archidoxes, I found two titles that Theophrastus made himself. In one he set 9 books, in the other 10. And in the first book he shows himself how he wants to divide these Archidoxes into 10 parts, as a memorial for his age. But there are no more than 8 left. Some therefore think that the book De Renouatione et Restauratione is the second, De separatione Elementorum is the third. Because in libro 1 he writes de mysterijs Microcosmi, so De Renouatione Microcosmi should immediately follow. Others, on the other hand, consider it to be the ninth book. I have set it as the ninth book, but will leave everyone to judge for themselves. And although Theophrastus says he wants to leave the 10th book unwritten, he still writes in the same place that it will be understood well by his followers. After he shows the use in libri de vita longa, how to maintain a long life, I consider it with others to be the 10th book, which will remain hidden from the idiots, because he does not want it to be revealed to them. In these books of Archidoxes he teaches the true and unique medicine, of which he mentions in many places. Although God has given us various medicines, as Theophrastus says, doctors should know that there is only one medicine in which all anatomy, all illnesses, and all medicines stand, which is the highest medicine in all things. He also does the same in Tinctura Physicorum, which I have had printed among the Archidoxes for reasons, because this Tinctura Physica, as he writes, is universal, so that an invisible fire consumes all illnesses, whatever they may be called, whose dose is very small, but the effect is very powerful. Now Theophrastus sets two useful Tincturae Physicorum, one on the transmutation of metals, which I leave in their worth. The other on the renovation of the body, which should be considered first by doctors, whose only purpose should be to create secrets, not silver and gold, and to prepare them, as Theophrastus teaches in Paragrano, against illnesses, because they should take from alchemy the right Simplicia, Magnalia, Arcana, Mysteria, Virtutes, Vires and whatever they need for healing, so that they can separate the pure from the impure and have a pure, clean and certain medicine that is highest in its power, as God the Lord has given us. Alchemy is necessary for the doctor for this purpose, from which all medicine is prepared, and without this art neither the doctor nor the pharmacist can accomplish anything, as is clearly shown in the third part of Paragrani.

As for the Book of Occult Philosophy, the main reason I have attached it at the end is that everyone can see how unfairly Theophrastus has been treated by those who accuse him of being a necromancer and do not know what true magic and a true mage are, which all philosophers and doctors should know, since the whole natura rerum is known by it and no sorcery is involved. For the three Wise Men in the New Testament were not sorcerers, but the highest philosophers who were also found to be magi. Thus Theophrastus was not a necromancer, but a natural mage. In these little books, one will find what he thought of such matters, which the adversaries can read and judge whether he had more to do with God than with the devil, as they say.

After I wanted to publish publicly the secrets and mysteries of the most renowned and famous philosopher and physician that Germany has ever had, Philipp Theophrastus Paracelsus, which he described in these books, I should dedicate them to no one else but Your Roman Imperial Majesty, the head of the Holy Roman Empire. Not only because Your Roman Imperial Majesty wanted to graciously protect and defend these books against the attacks of the Theophrastomastigas, but also so that Your Roman Imperial Majesty, along with other great princes and lords, may receive better knowledge of the teachings of Theophrastus.

If his teachings were false, as some have proclaimed, then why should not all princes and lords rightfully help to persecute them? However, if they (as is proven by his writings) were given by God Almighty for the benefit of our homeland, out of His special grace, then all great lords cannot neglect to direct matters towards recognizing and implementing everything that Theophrastus left behind and proving it true. How much effort do princes and lords put into maintaining peace and order in their own lands and protecting their people from enemies, bringing the best people they can find into service? Since they have many enemies who threaten their lives, health, and well-being, no less than others, such as Quartan fever, dropsy, seizures, leprosy, apoplexy, lupus, cancer, fistula, and the like, it is only reasonable for all potentates to apply no less diligence in selecting remedies to counter these diseases, which Galen and his followers have so far sought in vain. If now Theophrastus has sufficiently written about all of these, then the great lords would deserve eternal praise and thanks for their diligence and earnestness in these matters, knowing that they too can fall into serious illness and be subject to death, just like the poorest on earth.

However, in these matters, it is necessary not only to choose learned and experienced people but also those who are upright, righteous, and devoted to the common good of God, seeking to serve both the poor and the rich. Through such people, with God's blessing, the art of the ancients (with which they maintained their health and longevity) revealed to us through Theophrastus can be implemented through diligent work, and the poor sick can be helped.

And since Your Roman Imperial Majesty has inherited from the noble House of Austria, the love and generosity towards all good arts, along with other high princely virtues, and has graciously promoted and held them in high honor and dignity, no less than the peace-loving and powerful Roman Emperor Ferdinand, of blessed memory, Your Roman Imperial Majesty intends to graciously acknowledge Theophrastus Paracelsus's secrets and high gifts, which God has granted him, and not allow him to be suppressed by his enemies, who either want to learn from him and leave their ignorance behind or refuse to make the effort. We gain nothing without work, and nothing remains hidden that we diligently seek. Therefore, no one should be turned away from seeking the hidden truth and words that God will reveal to each one in due time.

However, since there are also many good people among the followers of Galen who acknowledge the truth and would like to see something better than what they have had so far, I urge all those who boast of Theophrastus not to attach themselves to him for the sake of money, prestige, honor, and fame and to deceive people with sophistry. Instead, they should diligently strive to demonstrate their art honestly in the aforementioned diseases so that the work may praise the master and the light may dispel darkness. Then everything that opposes the truth will fall and must give way. But if this does not happen, the words, writings, and insults will have no effect on our side, just as the persecution of Theophrastus by the followers of Galen has not succeeded in the past.

As I have mentioned before, I urge both sides again to consider the love that Theophrastus particularly demanded from a physician. We will achieve nothing by persecuting each other. However, the followers of Galen should consider that although they may bring forward many false accusations, they will not be able to refute the truth and must let the blessing of God continue. It is the same for us as it was for the Jews who saw the works of Christ, our dear Lord, yet their envy and hatred were so great that they rejected Christ, the light of the world, and loved darkness until they received punishment. God forbid that something like this happens to us too, as we oppose the will of God. I cannot refrain from mentioning that God has abundantly shown His grace to some pious people who have achieved more than those who have opposed Theophrastus so far.

May the Almighty and benevolent God grant Your Roman Imperial Majesty long-lasting health, grace, wisdom, and understanding, so that you may graciously promote, establish, and maintain peace, tranquility, and unity in the Holy Roman Empire for the glory of God and the benefit and salvation of poor Christians.

Given in Strasbourg on January 28, 1570.

Your Roman Imperial Majesty's most humble servant,

Michael Toxites, physician from Strasbourg.
