Hab mich der arbeit des verteütschens also vnterwunden/ aber nicht allenthalben von wort zu wort verdolmetschet/ sonder etwan ein halbes etwan ein gantzes Capittel/ nicht ohne vernüfftige vrsachen ausgelassen.

Was den grundt belangt/ da hab ich mit trewem fleis etwan von wort zu worte{{EditAbbr|n}}/ etwa{{EditAbbr|n}} auch die translation erkleret wie mich gedunckt hat/ das es besser möchte verstanden werden/ vnd mehr nütz schaffen könte/ vnd bin gewiss/ das mich kein verstendiger wird in diesem fall verdencken werden.

Preface.

To the illustrious, high-born princes and lords, Lord Wilhelm and Lord Georg Ernst, father and son, counts and lords of Henneberg, my gracious princes and lords.

Illustrious, high-born princes, gracious lords,

When nearly two years ago, at Your Princely Graces' gracious request, I came from Italy to this land and willingly submitted myself to Your Princely Graces' service, I was not greatly surprised to find several astrologers, knowing well that the devil does not rest nor ceases to sow his weeds among the good seed, and all that can serve to hinder and diminish God's glory, but on the contrary to promote idolatry and blasphemy, he plants and maintains with the greatest diligence.

But I had to wonder, not unreasonably in my opinion, that this blasphemous, idolatrous astrology should have more room precisely in those places where the word of God has been faithfully preached for many years than in all the ends of Christendom.
I do not think that in any place outside of Germany it is so common that almost all people align their actions and inactions according to the course of the heavens, even in the smallest matters.
For when one lets blood, cuts hair, takes medicine, cuts hair and nails, puts on new clothes, travels and intends to do something similar, one must first consult the almanac and ask whether the sky would bestow fortune on it or not.

By such means, the devil tends not only to establish horrifying blasphemy, as Your Princely Graces and all understanding people, especially those who follow the word of God and are Christians, will see from the following translated booklet, but it also greatly hinders the pious doctors in their intentions towards their patients in many ways, the patients are curtailed, and if occasionally, by divine providence and God's gracious will, the patient's hope is not fulfilled, the doctor must be guilty, since he did not give and apply his medicines, and whatever the patient's unavoidable necessity demands, in a good sign according to the almanac.

For as it happened to others, I can take it from myself, I was not once alone, have been hindered in my intentions by these reasons, and have also often had to hear that no good doctor can be who is not also an astrologer.

When I now, from the grace of the Almighty, knew to report that every Christian is obligated and duty-bound above all things to promote the honor of God, his lord and redeemer (as far as he can), to resist all blasphemy, to serve his neighbor and prevent his harm, I did not neglect to think how I might lighten my conscience in this matter and make the crude, simple common man (who can neither read nor understand the books written against this astrology in Latin before this time, in a brilliant and irrefutable manner) realize that he not only harms himself by believing in the astrological prophecies, but also horribly dishonors, blasphemes, and angers God.

And after long consideration, I had well resolved to direct a disputation that I had previously had in Italy with understanding lords and good friends for three days on the subject of this matter (as soon as I completed my journey, which I had planned again to Italy with Your Princely Graces' gracious good will, and returned to Your Princely Graces) so that it would cover all parts of astrology, as it was then only focused on the telling of truth, from the figure of human birth.

But as I rode many days with these thoughts, and on the return journey due to peace stopped at Überlingen with the highly learned, my beloved sir and friend, Doctor Wilhelm Mor von Allensbach, a practitioner of medicine, I found a small book written in the vernacular for the common man by Jerome Savonarola of Ferrara almost sixty years ago. Upon finding this, I decided to translate it into German to warn devout Christians about astrological lies and blasphemies.

I undertook the task of translation, not always translating word for word, but sometimes leaving out half or even a whole chapter, not without good reason. As for the main body of text, I diligently translated, at times explaining the translation where I thought it could be better understood and provide more benefit. I am certain that no one with understanding would blame me for doing so.

Lastly, I also added the aforementioned disputation I had in Italy, complete with refutations, deflections and counterarguments, to help those who, aside from Christian arguments, also want to hear arguments rooted in reason or philosophy.

Gracious Princes and Lords, I undertook this task mainly and solely to promote the honor of God, to disrupt idolatry, and to instruct the common man not to rely on the course of the heavens, but rather on God's grace and proper means ordained by God in his actions. By doing this, one can avoid the harm and damage that often comes from astrology.

If I sought anything else, I would not have begun this work, but would have undertaken something different.

The reason I now let this work, under the name and gracious protection of Your Princely Graces, be distributed among the people and printed is primarily due to two reasons.

The first is that I want all my abilities, knowledge and understanding to be used for the honor, benefit, and pleasure of Your Princely Graces. I acknowledge myself to be indebted and willing for this. When I consider the benevolence and gracious will of Your Princely Graces (as is fitting often), I can only think that all my abilities and actions should rightfully belong to Your Princely Graces. And if something useful and good can be achieved by me, the honor and glory should rightfully be attributed to Your Princely Graces as the main cause, since I am their humble servant.

The second reason is that I have observed Your Princely Graces, among many other authorities, to be primarily inclined to promote anything that causes the honor and the holy name of the Lord to be widely known and cherished, and conversely, to hinder and eliminate anything that diminishes God's honor and misleads people from their true consolation, with gracious Christian and faithful zeal.

Even though some might interpret this as flattery on my part, I could provide many substantiated arguments in praise of Your Princely Graces. However, for reasons mentioned before, I willingly refrain from doing so.

Therefore, I do not doubt that Your Princely Graces will graciously and gladly accept the protection and defense of this difficult work of mine, as it seeks only the honor of God and the benefit of the neighbor.

I call it a difficult task because these topics, to be discussed in German here, have not been dealt with before in the German language, as far as I know. Besides, I am not as experienced and practiced in this language as the necessity of the matter would require.

If the well-learned Mr. Sebastianus Glaser, Your Princely Graces' Chancellor, my favorable dear sir and friend, hadn't helped me with the language from time to time (indeed, very often and much), I wouldn't have been able to translate it as it is (not to mention, I could have done it better).

May the almighty God the Father, our redeemer Jesus Christ, together with the Holy Spirit, protect Your Princely Graces in long health and all well-being of soul and body, to which I, with humble diligence, entrust myself.
