Mai 1638 in Grätz. </br> Johann Friedrich Eggs (Exius) studierte in Freiburg und Ingolstadt, wo er 1589 zum Magister promoviert wurde. 1597 ging er zum Medizinstudium an die Universität Basel und 1599 nach Padua. Für 1609 ist Eggs als Mitglied des Rats seiner Heimatstadt Rheinfelden bezeugt; in Rheinfelden hielt er sich auch 1623 auf, als ihn der böhmische Paracelsist Daniel Stoltz von Stoltzenberg (1600 – nach 1644) dort besuchte; seit 1619 besaß er ein Haus in Basel. Seit 1618 soll Eggs Rat und Leibarzt Erzherzog Leopolds gewesen sein. 1625 wird Eggs von Heinrich Schobinger als der einzige noch praktizierende Alchemiker in Basel erwähnt. – Von 1630 an erscheint Eggs als Goldgewerke im Zillertal (Tirol); unter dem Tiroler Landesfürsten Erzherzog Ferdinand (1529-1595) führte er den Titel eines Leibmedicus. </br> Eggs soll in seiner Jugend Schüler von Johann Baptista van Helmont (1579-1644) gewesen sein und mit ihm bis zu seinem Lebensende Briefe gewechselt haben. Jacob Zwinger widmete Eggs sein Werk <i>Principiorum Chymicorum Examen</i> (1609). | |||
