I. Basic information

Printing History, Manuscripts. First printed in 1565 in the second edition of the Holzbüchlein (§ ‎3.10), edited by Michael Toxites.

Editions. Not edited by Huser or Sudhoff.

Relationship between different versions. The first edition of the Holzbüchlein (§ ‎3.10), printed in 1564, announced on the title-page a “useful treatise on the vitriol and its virtues.” Inside, appended to the Holzbüchlein, the reader found the “Proceß/ vnd ardt Olei Vitrioli” (process and usage of the oil of vitriol) as well as excerpts from two unpublished texts by Paracelsus concerning the vitriol. In the second edition this appendix was renamed “Von dem Vitriol/ vnd seinen kranckheyten/ Tractatus Theophrasti Paracelsi.” The “Proceß Olei Vitrioli,” incomplete in the first edition, was now printed in full, and the excerpts from other works were considerably expanded.

Structure, genre/form, perspective, style.

Relationship to other texts. Adam von Bodenstein published the “Process vnd art olei vitrioli” as well as some excerpts on vitriol from other texts in Deß hocherfahrnesten Medici Aureoli Theophrasti Paracelsi schreyben, von den kranckheyten, so die vernunfft berauben (Basel: Pietro Perna, 1567; VD16 P 634; Sudhoff, Bibliographia Paracelsica, 145–146 n° 91). This may have been an answer to Toxites’s edition. Similarities and differences to Toxites’s publication have not yet been investigated.

Authenticity, authorship. A compilation of authentic Paracelsian passages about vitriol.

Time of writing. Probably compiled in the 1560s.
