Jnsonders großgünstiger liebe Herren/ vnd mächtige Förderer/ es schreibet/ der {{Pagemark|f. )(2v}} auch Edle/ Ehrnveste/ Hochgelehrte/ Bewehret {{MarkupAntiqua|Philosophus}} vnd {{MarkupAntiqua|Medicus, Philippus Theophrastus Paracelsus}}/ daß ein jeglich ding soll dem Liecht der Natur gemeß außgelegt vnd genommen werden/ auß der anzeigung der ersten Schöpffung/ Dann ein jeglicher Anfang/ ist ein Vrsprung seines nachfolgenden/ ist auch die Eygenschafft vnnd Natur desselbigen/ Sintemal ein gleiches macht jhm kein vngleiches: Also ist die erste Schöpffung Himmels vnd der Erden/ vnd da sie geschaffen ist worden/ nicht allein in der Form vnd Figuren/ sondern auch in natürlichen Kräfften/ vnnd Eygenschafften/ vnd nach Schöpffung dieser dingen allen ist auß jhnen der Mensch worden/ gemacht durch die Handt GOttes/ nach seiner Bildung. Solches recht zuverstehen/ so ist der Menschen die kleine Welt/ nicht in der Form vnnd leiblichen Substantz/ sondern in allen Kräfften vnd Tugenden/ wie die grosse Welt ist. Auß dem Menschen nun folgt der Edle Nam {{MarkupAntiqua|Microcosmus:}} Das ist so viel/ daß all Himlische Lauff/ jrdische Natur/ Wässische Eygenschafft vnd Lufftische Wesen in jhm seynd/ auch ist in jm die Natur aller Früchten/ der Erden/ aller Ertz/ Natur der Wasser/ dabey auch alle {{MarkupAntiqua|Constellationes,}} vnnd {{Apparatus|Corr|vnnd|nvnd}} die vier Winde der Welt. Was ist auff Erden/ deß Natur vnnd Krafft nicht im Menschen sey: also edel/ also subtil/ also scharff ist der {{MarkupAntiqua|Limbus}} gewesen/ darauß Gott den Menschen nach seiner Bildtnuß gemacht hat/ dann da soll ein jeglicher natürli- {{Pagemark|f. )(3r}} cher betrachten/ daß Gott den Menschen/ den er nach seiner Bildung geformiret/ auß dem Edlesten {{MarkupAntiqua|Composito}} gemacht hat/ welches gleichen keiner nimmermehr wird. Das weisen auß die grosse Werck/ die es offenbar machen/ daß der Himmel in seinen kräfften so Edel nicht seyn kan/ der Menschlich Leib ist jhm gleich/ noch die Erde/ noch kein Element. Diese grosse wunderliche ding sind alle im Menschen: Vnnd in summa in allem der grossen Welt gleich. Ob nun wol nicht ohn/ daß der Menschn mit solchen edlen Tugenden/ vor dem Fall Adams vnnd Even gezieret gewesen/ auch alle wissenschafft/ Weißheit vnd Erkandtnuß gehabt/ so folget doch keines wegs darauß/ daß auch wir/ alß dero Kinder vnnd Nachkommen zu dieser vnser zeit nach dem Fall/ ebener massen/ wie sie erleuchtet/ begabt vnd gezieret seyn sollen/ Sintemal männiglich vnverborgen/ daß Gott der Allmächtige alle Menschen nacket vnd bloß auff diese Welt hat lassen geboren werden/ die weder Kunst noch Weißheit mit sich bringen/ sondern müssen nur der Gnad Gottes/ was er jhn zuschickt/ erwarten/ gibt jnen auch auß freyem willen nichts mehr alß das Leben/ sie seyen gesundt oder kranck/ das befihlt er der Natur: lernen reden/ befihlt er jren Eltern. Vnd weiter/ so sie auffwachsen/ müssen sie alle ding mit grosser mühe fleiß vnd schweren arbeit/ daß sie also die wenigste Kunst nicht vermögen/ lernen: So sie nun müssen lernen/ so muß etwas seyn/ das nicht Menschlich ist/ das sie lehret/ dann {{Pagemark|f. )(3v}} der Mensch wie gemeldt/ kan je im anfang nichts/ da sie nun wollen lernen/ so ist jhr erster Grundt in Gott/ der sie lehret/ vnnd auß Gnaden/ was sie bedürffen/ jhnen mittheylet vnnd zuschickt/ wann wir derhalben alle ding wol ermessen/ so befinden wir/ daß dasselbige durch ein Mittel geschehen/ alß das Gott der HErr Himmel vnd HErden schuff/ da schuff ers alß ein Mittel zu seyn/ auß welchem wir erlangen kündten/ das jenig/ darüber der Leib herrschen soll: gleicher gestalt ist der Mensch ein Herr vber alles gesetzet/ der Ecker/ Wiesen/ Weingarten/ &c. doch nicht darvmb/ daß die Erde vnd Sonn jhm das gegeben/ sondern Gott gibts nach verordnung dieser Mittel/ weils jhm also gefallen. Ebener massen haben wir Menschen nicht von vns selber die Weißheit der Künsten/ sondern auch durch gewisse Mittel/ welche seindt die vnsichtbare Geister/ die gleicher weiß/ wie ein Acker der vns Frucht gibt/ also auch die Kunst vnd Weißheit von jnen/ sie seyen gleich Engel oder sonsten andere/ so zu vns kommen/ wie sie von den {{MarkupAntiqua|Philosophis}} genandt vnd beschrieben seynd/ erlernet vnd zuwegen bracht werden/ Jnmassen dann der Engel zu Maria kam/ vnd sagt/ du bist voller Gnaden. Jtem/ Josephen/ Danieln/ Jacoben vnd andern in H[eiliger] Schrifft/ so wol Alten alß Newen Testaments/ mehr geschehen/ denen alten durch diß Mittel/ was Gott von jnen gefordert oder zu thun begehret/ durch die Engel oder Geister kundt vnd offenbar worden. Nun/ wie diß offenbar ist/ also werden vns auch die Gnad/ Gaben {{Pagemark|f. )(4r}} vnnd Weißheit/ denen es Gott gönnet/ heimlich mitgetheilet/ vnd ein jeglicher behelt die Gab/ die jhme von Gott zugeschickt wird/ einer diese/ der ander ein andere/ muß derhalben ein jeder mit dem jenigen/ was jhm Gott zugeschickt/ zu frieden/ vnd jme dasselbig ein Englischen Gruß/ der eben so viel/ alß dieselbig Gab ist/ seyn lassen/ Dann wie kündten wir die Erden zu bawen/ vnd vber alles so in derselben ist/ wie sichs gebürt/ zu herrschen wissen/ wann wir nicht ein vberschwengliches Liecht/ welches vns solches lehret/ hetten? Dieweil dann alle ding so wir in Künsten vermögen ein Geschenck vnd Gabe Gottes von oben herab/ dem Menschen zu Nutz vnd Gut zugebrauchen gegeben ist/ so sollen auch dieselbigen hinwidervmb Gott zu Lob vnd Ehr/ alß dem der sie auß Gnaden geben/ gebraucht werden. Wollen derhalben kürtzlich/ weil ich das eine Tractätlein {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabalam Chymicam intituliert,}} den Vnterscheyd/ so zwischen der {{MarkupAntiqua|Magiae, Cabalae}} vnd {{MarkupAntiqua|Nigromantiae}} ist/ damit es von den vnverstendigen nicht vor ein Teufelich oder Schwartzkünstlerisch Werck/ sondern vor die aller vollkommenste vnd höchste Weißheit geachtet werden möge/ anzeigen. Vnd wissen zwar erstlich/ was rechte ware {{MarkupAntiqua|Philosophi}} seynd/ gar wol/ daß die natürliche {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} von der Zahl jren Vrsprung habe/ jedoch ist es nicht ohn/ daß die {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia Alchymiae Philosophia,}} vnd darzu {{MarkupAntiqua|praecipua pars Cabalae}} sey/ welche aber zweyerley/ deren eine Teuffelisch/ die mit allen jren zugethanen vmbständen/ ein recht abscheulich vnd verflucht werck ist. Die ander aber/ wenn sie {{Pagemark|f. )(4v}} im Grundt angesehen) ist nichts anders/ dann ein vollkommene vollendung der {{MarkupAntiqua|Philosophiae,}} welche man ein vollkommenste vnd höchste Weißheit nennet. Dann bey den Persern heisset {{MarkupAntiqua|Magus}} so viel/ alß ein Dolmetscher oder Außleger vnd Liebhaber Göttlicher Geheimnuß. Zwischen diesen beyden Magischen Künsten nun/ ist wie der Ehrenveste vnnd Hochgelehrte Herr {{MarkupAntiqua|Bernhardus Gerhardus Penotus à portu sanctae Mariae, Aquitanus,}} beyder Artzneyen Doctor, in seinen Theophrastischen {{MarkupAntiqua|Vademecum}} weitleufftig meldet/ ein sehr grosser Vnterscheydt vnnd Vngleicheit. Dann die Teuffelische wird nicht allein von der gantzen Christlichen Religion/ sondern auch von allen wolbestelten Policey Ordnungen verdampt/ vnd billich außgereutet. Wer darvon etwas kan oder weiß/ der verhelets gemeinglich jederzeit/ damit es dem {{MarkupAntiqua|Authori}} nicht zu nachtheil gereiche/ derselbigen hat sich nie kein wahrer {{MarkupAntiqua|Philosophus,}} oder einer der lust zu guten Künsten gehabt/ beflissen. Diese {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} ist nur gern in der Finsternus/ vnd in öden Wüsteneyen/ ein jegliche Kunst aber/ so das Liecht schewet/ ist nicht vnbillich verdechtig/ also auch die/ welche von den Geistern der Finsternuß jhren Vrsprung nimpt. Die andere {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} aber wird von allen verständigen weisen Leuten/ so von allen Nationen vnnd Völckern/ so sich in allerley Göttlicher vnd Himlischer dingen Geheimnuß vnd deren Erforschung erlustigen/ {{MarkupAntiqua|approbirt}} vnnd angenommen/ dieses {{Pagemark|f. )(5r}} ist die höchste vnd heiligste {{MarkupAntiqua|Philosophia}}/ auß dieser ist zu der Vralten Zeiten aller hoher Künste Erfahrung/ Rhumb/ Ehr vnd Herligkeit hergeflossen/ nach dieser ist {{MarkupAntiqua|Pythagoras, Democritus, Plato}} vnd andere viel mehr/ dieselben zu erlangen/ weit vnd fern vber Wasser vnd Landt gereiset/ dieselbige haben sie auch nach jrer widerkunfft fortgepflantzt/ vnd darauß alle jhre {{MarkupAntiqua|Arcana}} gehabt/ haben sie auch/ wie nicht vnbillich in aller geheim gehalten.

Gleich wie nun die Teuffelische {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia,}} die sonsten {{MarkupAntiqua|Nigromantia}} genandt wird/ weder durch jhre Kunst noch geschickligkeit/ einigen Rhumb oder Ehr erlangen mag: Also ist hergegen diese wahre {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia,}} welche das fürnembste {{MarkupAntiqua|fundamentum Cabalae}} ist/ der allerhöchsten vnnd vnaußsprechlichsten Geheimnuß also voll/ daß sie in betrachtung derer/ beyde Gott dem Schöpffer selbst/ vnd dann der gantzen Natur Erkandtnuß öffnet vnd an tag gibt. Diese bringt durch Gottes hülff vnd beystandt alle Kräffte/ so in der weiten Welt hin vnd wider verborgen/ ans Liecht herfür. Vnd gleich wie ein Ackermann den Weinstock an den Vlmen oder Rüstbaum pflantzet/ also kan auch der {{MarkupAntiqua|Magus}} die Erden mit dem Himmel/ das ist/ die vntere Kräffte mit den obern vereinigen/ vnd also zu reden verehelichen. Diese {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} erwecket eine rechte verwunderung ob den Wercken GOTtes/ darauff dann die geneigtwillige Liebe/ Glaube vnnd Hoffnung gewißlich folgen/ dann {{Pagemark|f. )(5v}} nichts vermag einige Religion oder Gottesdienst so trefflich zu befordern/ alß die stetige fleissige Einbildung vnd Betrachtung der Göttlichen Wunderwerck/ so durch die Göttliche {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} allein geschicht/ dardurch müssen wir gezwungen vnnd vnvmbgänglich singen vnnd sagen/ dein Göttliche Macht vnd Herrligkeit gehet vber Himmel vnnd Erden weit/ vnd diß sey also den jenigen/ so den vnterscheydt {{MarkupAntiqua|Magiae & Nigromantiae}} nicht allerdings wol verstehen/ zum vnterricht gnugsam gesagt.

Was aber nun ferner durch das Liecht der {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabalae}} vnnd {{MarkupAntiqua|Magiae,}} so wol von alters außgericht worden/ alß auch noch heutiges Tages zuwegen bracht werden mög/ darvon wil ich jtzt gleichfals kürtzlichen/ aber doch gründlichen Bericht thun.

Salomon der H[eilige] Hocherleuchte Mann schreibet an vielen vnterschiedlichen Orten/ viel denckwürdige vnd tieffsinnige Sprüch in seinen Büchern der Weißheit/ darauß klärlich zu beweisen/ daß er in solchen den Grundt vnd Fundament der Natürlichen {{MarkupAntiqua|Magiae}}/ vbernatürlichen {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabalae}}/ vnd Göttlichen {{MarkupAntiqua|Theologiae}} gelegt habe/ in welchen die {{MarkupAntiqua|semina}} vnnd Vrsprung der obgemeldten herrlichen Kunst/ {{MarkupAntiqua|spargirt}} vnd begriffen seynd/ auß welchen man diese verloschene {{MarkupAntiqua|Mysteria}} wider ans Liecht kan bringen. Der gantze Grundt aber ist {{MarkupAntiqua|Initium Sapientiae timor Domini,}} Sintemal niemands Gott gefallen thut/ oder denselbigen lieben kan/ er liebe denn die Weißheit/ vnd welche sie gebrauchen/ werden Gottes Freundt/ dann für vnd für gibt sie sich {{Pagemark|f. )(6r}} in die H[eilige] Seele/ vnd machet Gottes Freundt vnd Propheten. Dieses nun wie gesagt/ ist der gantze Vrsprung vnd Kunst/ wie weiter zu sehen im Buch der Weißheit am 7. Ca[pitel] da Salomon spricht/ Einfältig hab ichs gelernet/ miltiglich theil ichs mit. Was aber offtgemelte Kunst sey/ setzet er ebenmessig die {{MarkupAntiqua|Definition}} vnd spricht/ die Weißheit ist ein Liecht/ vnnd der Glantz so von ihr gehet/ verleschet nicht/ sie ist das hauchen der Göttlichen Krafft/ vnd ein Strahl der Herrligkeit deß Allmechtigen/ {{Apparatus|Corr|Allmechtigen/|Allmechtigen}} sie ist ein Glantz deß Ewigen Liechts/ ein vnbefleckter Spiegel der Göttlichen Krafft/ vnd ein Bildt seiner gütigkeit. Dieses Liecht aber ist nichts anders/ dann ein vnsichtbar {{Sign|Feuer}} ein Ewiges Liecht/ das nechst bey Gott gesetzt vber alle Himmel/ die Krafft/ Macht/ Form/ Leben/ Tugendt vnd Auffenthaltung aller ding im Himmel vnnd der Erden/ ein ewige Bewegung/ nicht die Natur/ sondern ein Herr vnd Gebärerin der natur/ vnd in summa alles in allem. Darvmb wird es so wol ein ewiges Liecht/ als auch ein Liecht der weißheit genandt dieweil es ein Liecht in jhm selbst/ auch die Grundfest der Weißheit in jm verborgen liegt/ es ist nicht gnugsam zu beschreiben/ was Krafft vnd Macht in jm steckt/ denn so wenig alß man die heimligkeit Gottes ergründen kan/ so wenig ists einem Menschen müglich zuerforschen. Es ist aber nicht zuverstehen/ daß es Gott gleich ist/ dann Gott ist ein HErr darüber/ von jm kompts/ hieran hat er sein Allmacht bewiesen/ wie zu sehen im Alten Testament/ da Moysi durchs Liecht geantwortet. {{Pagemark|f. )(6v}} Nun ists gewiß vnd glaublich/ dann Salomon wird nicht liegen/ sie sey ein Liecht vnnd jhr Glantz verleschet nicht/ Diß Liecht ist dreyfach vnd ist doch eins.

Wann nun einer diß Liecht sihet leuchten in der gantzen Natur/ in allen Creaturen/ auch das geringste nicht außgenommen/ es sey im Firmament/ Gestirn/ in der Lufft/ auff Erden/ in Bergen/ in Thalen/ in Creaturen/ in Wassern/ in der Tieffe deß Meers/ in Metallen/ Mineralien/ vnnd in summa in allen sichtbarn Creaturen/ in welchen allen das Liecht ist/ wie Salomon spricht/ HERR dein vnvergänglicher Geist ist in allen Creaturen/ welcher sihet leuchten vnd verstehets/ der heist vnd ist ein {{MarkupAntiqua|Magus,}} vnd sein Kunst heist {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia,}} {{MarkupAntiqua|Paracelsus}} nennets an vielen Orten das Liecht der Natur/ vnd ein ander Sonne/ bey welcher die weisen sehen. Diß Liecht suchen die weisen in Morgenlandt/ in dem Stern/ in welchem sie den König der Juden erkandten/ vnsern Erlöser vnd Ewigen Seligmacher/ &c. Deßgleichen {{MarkupAntiqua|Iohannes in Apocalypsi, Aron, Tobias, David, Daniel, Baruch, Ieremias, Hesekiel}} vnd alle andere Propheten/ welche alle das wahre Liecht gehabt vnnd erkandt haben/ vnd ist ein jeglicher ein {{MarkupAntiqua|Magus,}} Cabalist vnd {{MarkupAntiqua|Divinator}}/ so wol alß {{MarkupAntiqua|Moyses}} gewesen/ Darvmb ist {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabala}} billich ein Schlüssel aller verborgenen heimligkeiten genennet/ damit offenbaret vnd auffgeschlossen werden/ der Natur Secreta in allen Creaturen.

{{Pagemark|f. )(7r}} Dieses Liecht ist ein vnbegreiffliches {{Sign|Feuer}}/ davon die Himmel/ Planeten/ Stern/ vnd alle Element jhr Leben/ Liecht/ Bewegung/ Krafft/ vnd Auffenthaltung haben.

Wenn nun einer diß Liecht erkennet/ vnd siehet in vnsichtbaren Creaturen/ alß in Engelen/ ja in vnsichtbaren Creaturen/ alß in Engelen/ ja in vnsichtbaren Geistern/ vnd kan sehen alle Engelische Krafft/ kan sie auch gebrauchen/ der ist ein Cabalist/ vnd seine Kunst heist {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabala}}/ ist viel höher dann {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia,}} wiewol {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} so ein geschwindes Liecht ist wie ein Gedancke/ vnd so behandt/ daß sie in einem Augenblick durchgehet alle Geister/ wie verständig/ lauter vnd scharff sie seynd/ wie Salomon spricht/ Die Weißheit ist das aller behendest/ sie fähret durch alles/ so gar lauter ist sie.

Diß Cabalistische Liecht ist gewesen der Glantz vnd Liecht in dem Brustschildtlin deß Hohenpriesters/ vnd diß Liecht befahl Gott der HErr Moysi hineyn zuthun in die Edelgestein/ in diesem Liecht kan man auch sehen den Raht Gottes/ vnd seinen Willen/ vnnd gnädige Regierung/ der Menschen Eyngang vnd Außgang/ darvmb die Kinder Jsrael den gantzen Lauff jhres Lebens/ jhren Eyn vnnd Außgang darnach richten musten.

Auch ist diß die Eygenschafft der {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabalae}}/ daß/ wie die {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} ein Liecht vnd Erkändtnus ist/ aller natürlichen dingen/ diß Zeitliche Leben betreffend/ also macht sich {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabala}} zu den Geistlichen dingen die Seele betreffendt/ sonderlich aber zu der Erkandtnus vnsers HErrn Jesu Christi. Denn {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabala}} of- {{Pagemark|f. )(7v}} fenbaret die verborgenen Geheimnussen der schrifft von Messia/ welche Geheimnussen vnter dem buchstaben der Schrifft verborgen ligen/ in dem Cabalistischen Liecht aber/ sihet man diese verborgene Göttliche Geheimnuß. Wie die {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} ist ein Erkendtnuß des jrrdischen natürlichen Himmels/ nach welchem der jrrdische Mensch regieret wird/ wie denn der gantze Lauff deß Menschen lieget in dem Lauff des Himmels: Also ist die {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabala}} ein Liecht vnd Erkandtnus deß vbernatürlichen Himmels/ nach welchem die Gottseligen regieret werden/ welche einen andern Himmel haben/ der sie regieret/ nemlich den H[eiligen] Geist/ wer nach dem jrrdischen Himmel lebet/ vnd nach seinem natürlichen Einfluß/ der lebet Heydtnisch/ {{Apparatus|Corr|Heydtnisch/|Heydtnisch}} wer aber nach dem vbernatürlichen Himmel lebet/ nach dem heiligen Geist/ der lebet Christlich. Darvmb sind zweyerley Eynfluß influentia coeli/ vnd {{MarkupAntiqua|influentia divina}}/ welcher nach dem Göttlichen Jnfluß regieret wird/ der lebet Christlich/ der ander Thierlich.

So ist auch dieses der Vnterscheydt vnter {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} vnd {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabala.}} Die {{MarkupAntiqua|Magia}} offenbahret jhre Geheimnuß durch Bilder zu richten/ Figuren/ Character/ vnnd durch die löbliche Kunst der {{MarkupAntiqua|signatur,}} vnnd {{MarkupAntiqua|scientiam signatam.}} Die {{MarkupAntiqua|Cabala}} aber offenbahret/ ja verbirget jhre Weißheit in dunckelen Worten/ Sprüchen/ Rätzeln vnnd tieffsinnigen Reden. Darvmb die Propheten viel in der schrifft Cabalistischer weiß geredt haben/ da vnter dem Buchstaben viel heimlicher Weißheit verborgen {{Pagemark|f. )(8r}} liget/ aber die geschwindigkeit deß Cabalistischen Geistes offenbahrets alles. Auff die weiß hat die Königin auß Arabia dem Salomon mit Rätzeln vnd tieffsinnigen Sprüchen versucht. Aber er hats jhr alles gesagt/ dann bey jhm das Magische vnnd Cabalistische Liecht gewesen. Venerable, honorable, and learned sir, and honorable and highly learned sir, Doctor, your honor and your honor shall always have my willing and diligent services to the best of my ability. Especially to my gracious and beloved lords and powerful patrons, it is written by the noble, honorable, highly learned, and skilled philosopher and physician, Philippus Theophrastus Paracelsus, that every thing should be interpreted and taken according to the light of nature, from the indication of the first creation. For every beginning is a source of its following, and is also its property and nature, since the same does not make him unequal. Therefore, the first creation of heaven and earth, and when it was created, not only in form and figure but also in natural powers and properties, and after the creation of all these things, man was made from them by the hand of God, according to his image. To understand this rightly, man is the little world, not in form and bodily substance, but in all powers and virtues, just as the great world is. From man follows the noble name of Microcosm: that is to say, that all heavenly movements, earthly nature, watery properties, and airy beings are within him, and in him is the nature of all fruits of the earth, all minerals, the nature of water, and also all constellations and the four winds of the world. What is on earth, whose nature and power are not in man? So noble, so subtle, so sharp has the limbus been from which God made man according to his image. For every natural person should consider that God made man, whom he formed according to his image, from the noblest composition, which no one will ever equal. The great works demonstrate this, which make it evident that the heaven in its powers cannot be so noble, which is like the human body, nor the earth, nor any element. All these great and wonderful things are in man, and in sum, they are equal in all the great world.

Although it is not without doubt that man was adorned with such noble virtues and had all knowledge, wisdom, and understanding before the fall of Adam and Eve, it does not necessarily follow that we, their children and descendants, should also be equally enlightened, gifted, and adorned at this time after the fall. Since it is well-known that God Almighty has left all people born into this world naked and bare, without art or wisdom, and they must only wait for the grace of God to come to them, and freely choose nothing more than life, whether they are healthy or sick, which he commands by nature. He commands them to learn to speak to their parents. And further, as they grow up, they must learn everything with great effort, diligence, and hard work, so that they are not able to learn even the smallest art. If they must learn, there must be something that is not human that teaches them, for man, as mentioned, knows nothing in the beginning. Therefore, their first foundation for learning is in God, who teaches them and graciously shares with them what they need. If we consider all things well, we find that this happens through a means, just as God created the Lord of Heaven and Earth as a means from which we could obtain what the body should rule over. In the same way, man is appointed as a lord over everything, the field, meadows, vineyards, etc., but not because the earth and sun gave it to him, but because God gives it according to the ordinance of these means, as it pleases Him. 

Likewise, we humans do not have the wisdom of the arts from ourselves, but also through certain means, which are the invisible spirits, which give us knowledge and wisdom, just as a field gives us fruit. These spirits, whether angels or others, come to us and are learned and acquired, as they are called and described by the philosophers. As when the angel came to Mary and said, "You are full of grace." Likewise, to Joseph, Daniel, Jacob, and others in Holy Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, more has happened to them through this means, what God demanded or desired them to do was made known and revealed through the angels or spirits. Now, as this is evident, grace, gifts, and wisdom are also secretly shared with us to those whom God grants it, and each person retains the gift that is sent to him by God, one this, the other that, therefore each must be content with what God sends him and let it be an angelic greeting, which is as much as that same gift. For how could we cultivate the earth and know how to rule over everything in it as it should be if we did not have an overwhelming light that teaches us such things.

Since everything that we are capable of in the arts is a gift and grace from God given for the benefit and good of man, they should also be used to give glory and honor to God, as the one who has given them graciously. Therefore, I would like to briefly explain the difference between Magic, Cabala, and Necromancy, which should be considered by the ignorant as the most perfect and highest wisdom, not as a diabolical or black magical work.

Firstly, it is well known what true philosophers are, that natural magic has its origin from numbers. However, it is not without reason that alchemical magic is philosophy and, moreover, an essential part of cabala. But it is twofold, one diabolical, which, with all its associates, is a truly abominable and cursed work. The other, when examined in its foundation, is nothing else but a complete accomplishment of philosophy, which is called the most perfect and highest wisdom. For, among the Persians, Magus means as much as an interpreter or lover of divine mysteries.

Between these two magical arts, there is a very great difference and inequality, as the Honorable and Learned Bernard Gerhard Penotus from the port of St. Mary in Aquitaine, Doctor of Medicine, extensively states in his Theophrastian Vademecum. The diabolical magic is not only condemned by the entire Christian religion but also by all well-established policy ordinances, and rightly so. Those who know anything about it usually conceal it so as not to harm their authority. No true philosopher or one who has a passion for good arts has ever been concerned with it. This magic is only comfortable in darkness and desolate wilderness. However, every art that reveals light is not unjustly suspected, as are those that derive their origin from the spirits of darkness.

On the other hand, the other magic is approved and accepted by all intelligent and wise people of all nations and peoples who enjoy the mystery of all divine and heavenly things and their exploration. This is the highest and most sacred philosophy, from which, in ancient times, all the experience, direction, honor, and glory of high arts have flowed. Pythagoras, Democritus, Plato, and many others have traveled far and wide over water and land to acquire them. They also transmitted them after their return and had all their Arcana, which they also kept secret.

Just as now the devilish magic, otherwise called necromancy, cannot achieve any advantage or honor through its art or skill, so on the other hand this true magic, which is the foremost foundation of the Kabbalah, is so full of the highest and unspeakable secret that it opens and reveals the recognition of both God the Creator himself and then the entire nature. By the help and assistance of God, it brings forth all the powers hidden throughout the vast world into the light. And just as a farmer plants the vine on the trellis or the stake, so too can the Magus unite the lower powers with the upper ones, that is, the earth with the sky, and thus speak of joining them in marriage. This magic awakens a true wonder in the works of God, upon which willing love, faith, and hope will certainly follow, for nothing is able to promote any religion or worship as excellently as the constant and diligent imagination and contemplation of the divine miracles that are wrought solely through divine magic. We must be compelled and cannot avoid singing and saying that your divine power and glory go far beyond heaven and earth. This is enough instruction for those who do not fully understand the difference between magic and necromancy.

But now, what can be further achieved through the light of the Kabbalah and Magic, which has been practiced since ancient times and can still be brought about today, I will now also give a brief but thorough account.

The holy and enlightened man Solomon wrote many memorable and profound sayings in his books of wisdom at various places, from which it is clear that he laid the foundation and groundwork of natural magic, supernatural Kabbalah, and divine theology, in which the seeds and origins of the aforementioned splendid art are scattered and contained, from which one can bring these lost mysteries back to light. The whole foundation, however, is "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," since no one can please God or love Him except by loving wisdom, and those who use wisdom become God's friends, for it gradually enters the holy soul and makes them God's friends and prophets. This, as I said, is the entire origin and art, as further seen in the Book of Wisdom in chapter 7, where Solomon says, "I learned it without guile, and I impart without grudging." But as for the aforementioned art, he sets forth the definition in equal measure and says, "Wisdom is a light, and the radiance that goes forth from it never ceases. It is the breath of the power of God and a stream of pure glory from the Almighty. It is a reflection of eternal light, a spotless mirror of God's power, and an image of His goodness."

This light, however, is nothing other than an invisible, eternal light, which is placed next to God above all heavens, the power, strength, form, life, virtue, and sustenance of all things in heaven and on earth, an eternal movement, not nature, but a mistress and bearer of nature, and in sum, everything in everything. Therefore, it is called an eternal light as well as a light of wisdom, since it is a light in itself and the foundation of wisdom is hidden in it. It is not enough to describe the power and might that lies within it, for just as little as one can fathom the secrecy of God, it is just as impossible for a human being to discover it. But it is not to be understood that it is equal to God, for God is the Lord over it. He has demonstrated His omnipotence through it, as seen in the Old Testament when Moses answered through the light. Now it is certain and believable, for Solomon would not lie, that it is a light and its radiance never ceases. This light is threefold and yet one.

When someone sees this light shining throughout nature, in all creatures, even the smallest not excluded, whether in the firmament, stars, in the air, on earth, in mountains, in valleys, in creatures, in waters, in the depths of the sea, in metals, minerals, and in sum, in all visible creatures, in which all the light is, as Solomon says, "Lord, your incorruptible spirit is in all creatures, which sees and understands," he is called and is a Magus, and his art is called Magic. Paracelsus calls it the light of nature in many places and another sun, by which the wise see. The wise seek this light in the East, in the star in which they recognized the King of the Jews, our Savior and Eternal Redeemer, etc. Likewise, John in the Apocalypse, Aaron, Tobias, David, Daniel, Baruch, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and all other prophets, who all had and recognized the true light, and each one is a Magus, Cabalist, and Divinator, as well as Moses. Therefore, Cabala is rightly called a key to all hidden secrets, by which the secrets of nature in all creatures are revealed and unlocked.

This light is an incomprehensible fire, from which the heavens, planets, stars, and all elements have their life, light, movement, power, and sustenance. When someone recognizes and sees this light in invisible creatures, such as angels, and even in invisible spirits, and can see all angelic power and use it, he is a Cabalist, and his art is called Cabala, which is much higher than Magic, although Magic is such a swift light like a thought, and is so quick that it passes through all spirits in an instant, no matter how intelligent, pure, and sharp they are, as Solomon says, "Wisdom is the swiftest of all things; it penetrates and pervades all things."

This Cabalistic light was the radiance and light in the breastplate of the High Priest, and God commanded Moses to put this light into the precious stones. In this light, one can also see the counsel of God, His will, and gracious government, the entrance and exit of humans, so that the children of Israel had to align their entire course of life, their entrance, and their exit according to it.

This is also the property of Cabala, that just as Magic is a light and knowledge of all natural things concerning temporal life, so Cabala applies to spiritual things concerning the soul, especially to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For Cabala reveals the hidden mysteries of the Scripture concerning the Messiah, which mysteries are hidden under the letter of the Scripture, but in the Cabalistic light, one sees these hidden divine mysteries. Just as Magic is a knowledge of the earthly natural heaven, according to which the earthly human is governed, as the entire course of human life lies in the course of the heavens, so Cabala is a light and knowledge of the supernatural heaven, according to which the godly are governed, who have another heaven that governs them, namely the Holy Spirit. Whoever lives according to the earthly heaven and its natural influence lives heathenishly, but whoever lives according to the supernatural heaven and the Holy Spirit lives Christianly. Therefore, there are two types of influence, influentia coeli and influentia divina, and whoever is governed according to the divine influence lives Christianly, while the other lives beastly.

So this is also the difference between Magia and Cabala. Magia reveals its mysteries through images, figures, characters, and through the noble art of signature and scientiam signatam. But Cabala reveals, yes, hides its wisdom in dark words, sayings, riddles and profound speeches. Therefore, the prophets have spoken a lot of Cabalistic wisdom in Scripture, where much secret wisdom is hidden under the letters, but the speed of the Cabalistic spirit reveals everything. In the same way, the queen of Arabia tried to test Solomon with riddles and profound sayings, but he told her everything, for he had the magical and Cabalistic light in him. And this is now the difference between the Egyptian, Chaldean and Persian Magi or wise men, and between Joseph and Daniel. If Pharaoh's dream of the cows, and Nebuchadnezzar's dream of the great image and tree were natural, from the natural influence of the earthly heaven, then the Egyptian, Chaldean and Persian Magi could have interpreted and found them again, for everything that is natural finds Magia. But since these dreams were supernatural, and had a higher origin from the supernatural heaven, from which the true Church of God, God's people, is ruled, it was not within the power of the wise men to find and interpret this dream. They found it written in the firmament, as the prophet Daniel says in chapter 2 to the king: "The secret thing that the king asks of the wise men is not in their power to say to the king." But since Joseph and Daniel were Cabalists and had a higher spirit in them than in all the wise men, namely a Cabalistic spirit and light, they could find the forgotten dreams and interpretation. Where Magia ends, Cabala begins, and where Cabala ends, Theologia and the prophetic spirit begin. Thus, one must now distinguish between the three lights and spirits. Magia is the natural light and natural spirit. Cabala is a supernatural light and spirit, an angelic light. Theologia is the light of God, the Holy Spirit. Just as God speaks to a true theologian through the Holy Spirit, and as a true theologian has the colloquium divinum, which speaks to him in a divine and secret way, so nature speaks in all creatures with a Magus, through its spiritual signs and signature, and the firmament through its influence. Similarly, Cabala speaks through an angelic light and angelic power with a Cabalist, as God answered Moses through the light.

It is therefore clearly evident from this that no one can ever come to the attainment of the Summum Arcanum unless they are extremely well-versed in Magia and Cabala, since all those who have ever possessed the Lapis have been Magi and Cabalists, as is well proven.

But now, Your Honors, my esteemed and powerful supporters, as well as good friends one and all, I, out of observance and following the commendable practice of the old as well as the contemporary writers and authors of new books, dedicate and attribute this work of mine to you, with the purpose that you may have patrons and protectors against calumniators and detractors, or otherwise show your grateful and dutiful mind towards those who have been favorable to you in every way. 

Although it may not be fitting for me to depart from this old custom, and because of Your Honors' and Your Honors' desire to serve, to dedicate and attribute my little chemical treatise, which has never been published before, under your renowned name, protection, and reputation. 

Firstly, because I am well aware that Your Honors have a special love for this high art, and hold in high esteem those medicines which are prepared by means of it. But, above all, because they are described in such a way that they are founded on the foundation of true alchemy, according to my limited understanding and experience. I am also of the comforting assurance that Your Honors will graciously accept and commend these small treatises, which contain much within them and explain the writings of the ancient philosophers. 

However, I want to expressly state and declare that this dedication of mine is not intended or understood to mean that I presume to give Your Honors much instruction, teaching, and guidance through this work. For I consider myself far too insignificant in this regard, and such an effect would not be attained by these small treatises, which may be considered too trivial by Your Honors, especially since Your Honors are highly experienced in the art of alchemy and may have understood much more and better than what is contained in these different treatises, which, nevertheless, because of their excellence, cannot be entirely rejected. I commend the same to the gracious blessing of God, and remain faithfully committed to your constant friendship and favor.
