{{InfoboxTranslation|Date=2023-02-26}} To the most illustrious and high-born Princess and Lady, Lady Catherine, born and married Margravine of Brandenburg in Prussia, in Stettin, Pomerania, of the Kashubians and Wends, also in Silesia at Crossen, Duchess, Burgrave of Nuremberg, and Princess of Rügen, etc. My gracious Princess and Lady.
Most Serene, High-born Princess, Your Princely Grace is at all times my humble, dutiful, and willing service in honor, Most gracious Princess and Lady, Our only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ presents himself with and in the most lovely, indeed most comforting and joyous example and likeness of the merciful and heartfelt Samaritan, as a truly blameless physician of body and soul, from which everyone, for the sake of his seriously entrusted Christianity, can see himself as in a clear bright mirror, in which way every man owes it to himself to lend his helpful hand to his poor, needy, and suffering fellow Christian, in all and every danger and need.
And to ensure that no one may excuse himself as to how, by what means, or from whom he can or should do this, the nobleman who has traveled far across the land has provided each of his servants with a pound to use, invest, and apply it to himself and his fellow Christian for temporal and eternal welfare.
However, since our only faithful Samaritan and noble physician of body and soul in no way wishes any of theirs to be done in secret, the light to be put under a bushel, nor the pound to be completely buried, he lays such a commandment to true, intelligible explanation of his final will, not only to his dear disciples, apostles, and present listeners, but also to all following Christians until the end of the world: So let your light shine before men so that they may see your good works and praise your Father in heaven.
Which is a commanding and faithful admonition of Christ, even though in the words of the serious, rough, and thundering law preacher Moses, it may not seem to resemble condemnation, nor sound like it to anyone's thinking, as if someone who does not comply with it will be cursed and condemned forever.
Therefore, no Christian should think that it is permissible for them, if God has bestowed upon them special gifts not given to others, if He has lit within them the light of nature, and thereby revealed to them His immeasurable omnipotence only in His creatures and creations (which I will leave aside for now the most exalted and blessed mysteries of divine and theological matters, as I did not intend to discuss them at this time but rather command others). He may use them according to his own whims and desires, solely for himself or arbitrarily. Or, even if he does not possess all things in his hands like others or clearly and indisputably before his eyes, whether he may or may not apply himself to the ultimate perfection and knowledge of such lofty things, and use all possible diligence and earnestness (since he has the same open, straight path and level road before him as other well-practiced and knowledgeable persons) and thus, as it were, go around in circles until a roasted dove flies into his mouth.
Rather, it is also in such clear words of Christ of the same nature as the serious and eternal punishment of the disobedient and non-compliant as set forth in Moses. Since the final cause, or the purpose for which we are meant to let our light shine, is so clearly presented to us, namely, not only that it may shine before the world and thus before people as mortal beings, but primarily so that our dear Father in Heaven may be praised and honored through it. This is not left to our free will to do or not to do, but rather it is required of us with uncompromising divine zeal and seriousness.
Therefore, it will result in conclusive and irrefutable consequences that every Christian, especially those who are blessed by God with higher gifts and knowledge than others in the light of nature (or who have obtained it by fair or foul means through the writings, books, and works of other great luminaries), should not hide their received light under a bushel or the well-known and indelible glow left behind by those great luminaries behind them. They should not keep everything to themselves like an envious and treacherous dog that either spoils a piece of meat taken from a great lord's kitchen or room, or catches only a discarded bone, and yet does not allow any of its own kind or species to enjoy it. It should not be kept hidden in its envious dog-like sight and malicious mouth, concealed, or when it is well-managed, parceled out piece by piece with the theft of the true author's honor and name, thus depriving the poor and needy neighbor of the benefits and denying God the Father of all grace in heaven the due honor, praise, and glory required of him. Instead, they would irretrievably deprive themselves of the eternal glory and happiness that would otherwise be prepared for them in Christ.
Rather, God the Father wants to be honored in his Son and in all his works, through whom he has clearly laid his word and commandment in our mouths, hearts, and thoughts, as mentioned earlier. We must therefore follow it without fail, so that each person, having received one, two, three, more or fewer pounds and gifts, can, at the time of reckoning, return it to the great noble Lord who reaps where he did not sow and gathers where he has not scattered. This should be done in good Christian (not like the godless world's devilish ways of unchristian and damnable) interest, and in the manner in which he has served his fellow Christians, may he demonstrate.
And this should be carefully considered by those who, having attained a reasonable path for the first time, quickly find themselves yielding to the pain, work, dislike, and resistance of this wretched world, letting their hands and feet slip and fall, and thus depriving themselves and their neighbors of useful light, indeed the greatest, as mentioned above, which honors God the Father himself.
Likewise, those who can easily come to the aid and advice of a lover of art in several shortcomings on multiple occasions, so that a poor patient is not left hopeless, neglected or abandoned, and the true Spagyric is propagated through Christian love and not abused under a false title and appearance with all sorts of deceit, and thereby caused more destruction and diminution, and even called or insulted by the Jews, should be obligated to bring them to justice, since they can find God's express word and law, as well as that of their enemy's ox or donkey, walking astray. How much more so their erring neighbor and brother himself.
Since I have briefly reviewed and considered the highly esteemed and useful tract written by the respected and learned Dr. Bernhard G. Penot or Londrada from the port of Saint Mary in Aquitaine, a doctor of medicine, which was published in open print in Franckenthal some years ago and also in the past 94 years, I have found therein that such matters have hardly ever been brought to light as clearly and beneficially to everyone as by the excellent works of this highly enlightened man. (However, since sacred things should be kept for the sacred, and everyone who always understands alchemical writings only according to the literal meaning threshes a lot of straw, and besides that of other highly learned people, and especially of such an Arcanorum Supreme Monarch as Theophrastus Paracelsus, our faithful teacher, whose dignity and worth are undiminished.)
Thus, his excellent expertise not only seeks to promote the dissemination of well-proportioned, highly important, splendid, and beneficial writings that are of great use to the common good and to those in need, but also encourages everyone to engage in such Christian works and love. This is clearly evident in the conclusion of the first tractate, as well as in the beginning of the subsequent tractate on saltpeter, in the introduction to the chapter on Meht, in the preface to the unique secret of cancer treatment, and in the foreword to his book on the 115 cures and experiments of Theophrastus. His excellent expertise ardently strives to alleviate the suffering of his neighbor and to fulfill God's serious command, and therefore wishes to see that nothing is exceeded or neglected in this regard, particularly in all Christian seriousness, zeal, and unwavering diligence. On the other hand, the accursed envy and unchristian devilish greed that obstruct useful and well-known writings by distinguished people, such as the highly esteemed monarch Paracelsus, from benefiting the common good and the light of the needy neighbor, and which hinder and diminish the honor of God, are condemned, persecuted, and called upon God in heaven to bring about just punishment.
Thus, it is clearly evident that he does not want to hide his light under a bushel or put it under a bench, but rather intends to serve everyone who is not unworthy of it and to shine before their eyes without hesitation and with noticeable benefit.
However, these tractates and works (undoubtedly due to the fact that the highly learned author was not a native German, but rather a foreigner from the famous French crown) were written and printed in a graceful Latin language, making them incomprehensible to many Germans who are well-experienced and practiced in various good and expedient Spagyric matters and medicines. I myself have heard many of them sighing about this matter, as they have been deceived and caused more harm and ridicule by seeking the translation of a few less Latin words, which is treacherously delayed because they are not familiar with such languages.
Do not doubt with me, because our Christian religion and the word of God, which is the true Christian faith, as a beautiful and fruitful tree planted by the Holy Spirit of God with its roots and origins, and from which Christian love for our neighbor and all other Christian virtues, as the true and real useful and profitable fruits that come from it, have never been bound to any single language or country, nor are they now. Especially because it should be spread, preached, revealed, and proclaimed throughout the world through all languages and tongues. The dear disciples and apostles of Christ with divided fiery tongues and many languages at the holy feast of the new Pentecost were seen and heard through the work of the Holy Spirit of God. Some of them were highly experienced and enlightened men in medicine and other high mysteries, and not envious people. First and foremost, the excellent Dr. Bernhard G. Penot and all and each of the experienced people in Latin and other languages, chemists, and true spagyrics, should be acknowledged, not only myself or any other sincere German, that I show a friendly will to many of our nation who are diligent seekers and art lovers out of Christian and God-required love and affection. Therefore, since some may not understand any Latin word in this, as well as in others, as mentioned above, or at least may be misled by a false and misleading version, I now bring this treatise to light in our German mother tongue, most faithfully, not because I want to boast about it, but because in my simplicity and strenuous travels, and partly with the help of others, it was possible to do so. This is due to its catalogue and good foundation that is comparable to other languages. Indeed, by God Almighty, if we were not so ungrateful to Him, His divine, only saving Word would hardly ever have been so bright and clear in any language other than our German language, preached, and so widely spread. He may also graciously preserve this among us poor and now highly troubled German Christians until the eternal holidays (when we all and each in this world will have and retain the most significant secrets and mysteries, thorough knowledge, and perfect understanding), and may it ward off and prevent all heresies, fanaticism, sects, even the devil with his antichristian and Mohammedan fundamentals. Amen.
Therefore, these present treatises are full of secrets and undoubted great benefits, and in my simple hope, they are worthy to be accepted and appreciated not only by lowly and private persons but especially by high-ranking individuals adorned with God-given high names, promoted, protected, and upheld against envy.
Your princely grace, as a particular lover of good, steadfast, profound, and springing from the true source of medicine and mysteries, is so well known among many art lovers that for many times, as well as at present time, they have been published and promoted with great grace and expense. And besides, your princely grace is accustomed to investigate the mysteries of nature in many things with particular and diligent effort for your own benefit.
Therefore, Your Serene Highness, I have humbly dedicated to you my applied work of translating the aforementioned present treatises into our native German language, hoping that they may be accepted and appreciated not only by lowly and private individuals but especially by high-ranking persons adorned with God-given distinguished names, and protected from envy and defended.
As Your Serene Highness is a special lover of good, lasting, profound, and true medicines and mysteries, known to many art enthusiasts to the extent that they have been printed and promoted with great grace and expense, and also personally investigate the secrets of nature in many things with particular diligence.
Thus, I have wished to dedicate my work of translation to Your Serene Highness and respectfully request that you graciously accept it and protect it against all insane spirits who dare to slander and suppress the invincible monarch of medicine and mysteries, Theophrastus Paracelsus, and his faithful disciples who follow him in undoubted and profound truth, or at least to block all ways and paths for them, and to hold them in gracious protection and shelter.
Also, to give the most gracious guidance, cause, and promotion so that this true and founded medicine and mysteries can be brought more to light in the future, and may come to the aid and support of the common good and extremely needy Lazarus.
For this work of true Christian love and mercy, the true and only Samaritan, our doctor of body and soul, on that day, gave Your Serene Highness the eternal and glorious testimony that he had done it himself, along with the paternal sharing of eternal and blessed joys.
Furthermore, at this present time, Your Serene Highness, along with your most illustrious and noble princely spouse, young lordship, and young ladyship, I humbly commend to your gracious protection and shelter, long-lasting health of body and life of Christian subjects, especially those in need, entrusted to you, and may you graciously grant and maintain a happy reign and all prosperous welfare.
To this end, Your Serene Highness will always find me and all mine in unceasing Christian prayer day and night to Almighty God, and ready and willing to serve in Christian humility.
Dated Eißleben on the day of Bartholomew, in the year 1596.
Your Serene Highness's most obedient servant,
Johannes Hippodamus, Cheruscus.

To the most illustrious and high-born Princess and Lady, Lady Catherine, born and married Margravine of Brandenburg in Prussia, in Stettin, Pomerania, of the Kashubians and Wends, also in Silesia at Crossen, Duchess, Burgrave of Nuremberg, and Princess of Rügen, etc.
