Vnnd wiewol das einfeltige vnd gemischt öl von den Scropionen/ welches dem Johanni Damasceno{{Index|Name|Johannes Damascenus}} zugeschrieben wirt/ der Thyriac Andromachi/ vnnd die artzney Mithridatis wider gifften hoch gerhümet/ können sie doch nit von einem jeden an allen örtern mit geringem kosten bekommen werden/ ist derhalben von vielen nützlich vnd gut geachtet/ diese artzneien Discoridis jedermeniglich zu gut auch in vnser teutsch zu vertieren.

Dieweil dieselbigen leichtlich zu bekommen/ vnd von jedermeniglich (im fall der not) können bereitet werden. Nach dem es sich auch offt begibt/ daß ein Mensch durch gifft {{Pagemark|sig|A5v}} vergeben/ vnd nit weiß durch welches Gifft solchs geschehen/ ob es Operment/ Bleyweiß/ Silberglett/ Quecksilber/ Wolffswurtzel/ Flöhkraut/ Jbenbaum/ Schirling/ Monsafft/ Nachtschatten/ Eberwürtz/ oder nacket Huren gewesen seyn. Ja solches offt die Artzt selbst nit vnterschieden künnen/ wie sol denn ein vngelerhter wissen können/ ob er Goltkefer/ qualster oder Fichtenrauppen gegessen habe? Er disputiert nit was Gifft es gewesen sey/ sonder wolt gern daß jm geholffen würde. Derhalben hab ich bey dem Büchlein Dioscoridis{{Index|Name|Dioskurides}} angehengt die köstliche/ vnd von vielen bewerte artzney/ welche general ist/ vnd von vielen gantz nützlich wider allerley Gifft mag eingenommen werden/ vnd dem hochgelehrten Herrn Joanni Moibano{{Index|Name|Johannes Moibanus}} de Statt Augspurg{{Apparatus|Corr|Augspurg|Auspurg}}{{Index|Place|Augsburg}} verordneten Artzten seligen wirt zugeschrieben.

Daß ich aber/ Gnediger Herr/ dieses Büchlein E[uer] G[naden] dedicirt/ bitt ich E[uer] G[naden] wölle die vrsach gnediglich vernemen. Dann dieweil Gott der allmechtig E[uer] G[naden] für andern Fürsten vnnd Herren teutscher Nation wirdig geachtet/ vber dieselbige Stadt vnnd Landtschafft zu regieren/ darinn souil heilsamer Brunnen entspringen/ die von jm selbst ohn jrrdisch fewer von Menschen henden gemacht/ gewermet/ vnd vieler Menschen gebrechen vnd kranckheit hinweg nemmen/ Hab ich auch füglich geachtet/ daß solche heilsame artzneien vnter E[uer] G[naden] schirm solten ins liecht kommen/ als die da dienen zu verlengerung des Menschlichen lebens/ vmb welches wil- {{Pagemark|sig|A6r}} len E[uer] G[naden] Brunnen von vielen Menschen auß ferren örtern besuchet werden.

Gnediger Herr/ Wenn wir die wunderbarliche wercke des Schöpffers fleissig betrachten/ müssen wir bekennen/ daß der Heidnische Scribent Plinius{{Index|Name|Pliny}} viel ding wol betrachtet hat/ Da er im andern Buch von den historien der Welt/ die vier Element mit einander vergleichet/ vnd beweiset daß kein Element dem Menschen also freundtlich/ holdselig vnd trew sey/ als das Element der Erden. Dann wir müssen bekennen/ daß auß dem Element des wassers offt vil platzregen/ hägel/ schnee vnnd gewesser kommen/ dadurch nicht allein die früchte der Erden erseuffet/ sonder offt Vihe/ Heuser vnd Menschen mit grosser zahl vmbkommen vnd ertrincken. Durch die lufft werden offt in kurtzer zeit viel tausent Menschen vergifftet/ faren alle dahin/ ob sie nie hie gewesen weren. Justinus{{Index|Name|Justinus}} schreibet im sechsten Buch/ das anno 3533. nach erschöpffung der Welt/ ein vberauß groß sterben in gantz Griechenlandt gewesen/ in welchem die lufft also vergifftet/ daß den Menschen hende vnd füsse/ köpffe vnd arme verfaulet vnd abgefallen/ vnd die so von der kranckheit auff kommen/ also vergessen worden/ daß sie jr eigen Freunde nit mehr gekennet haben.

Durch das fewr werden offt schöne Stett vnd Dörffer in einer nacht mit Viehe vnnd Menschen verbrennet/ die in vielen Jaren nit gebawet seyn/ ist ein schröcklich anbildt der ewigen glut/ darinn alle Gottlosen ohn {{Pagemark|sig|A6v}} ende sollen gebrennt werden/ ist wie ein sichtlicher todt. Aber mit dem lieblichen Element der Erden ist es viel anders geschaffen/ denn sie ist vnser aller mutter/ wie die Schrifft saggt/ daß wir auß der Erden kommen seyn/ vnd also baldt sie vns hat geboren/ so tregt sie vns als lang wir leben/ ernehret vns/ gibt vns speiß vnd tranck/ bringt herfür nit allein Korn zu Brot/ schöne liebliche Kreuter vnd alelrley Obs zur speise/ flachß/ wolle vnd peltz zur kleydung/ viel Thier zur speise/ sonder auch allerley Wurtzel/ Kraut/ Blumen/ Gummi/ Ertz vnd andere ding zur gesundheit vnd artzney/ hat den Menschen also lieb/ daß es die Schlange/ welche einen Menschen/ wie Plinius{{Index|Name|Pliny}} sagt/ tödtlich gestochen/ nit wider in sich nimpt/ Ja wenn sie mit Menschen Blut begossen wirdt/ gibt sie dem Blut solche laute stimme/ daß sie von Gott im Himmel erhöret wirt.

Wenn der Mensch von allen Elementen verlassen/ vnd jm von allen die freundschafft auffgesagt/ nimpt die Erde den Menschen/ als jhr liebes kindt/ wider in jhren schoß/ decket jhn zu/ daß er nicht den Hunden vnnd Sewen zu theil werde. Jst die gemeine bettstatt/ darinn Reich vnd Arm/ Herren vnnd Vnterthanen ruhen müssen. Ja sie tregt des Menschen Grabstein vnd Grabschrifft/ erhelt sein gedechtnis/ daß seiner tugent nit vergessen werde.

Das Erdtreich ist ein gedültige mutter/ sie leidet/ daß sie von jren Kindern wirdt in jhr angesucht gekratzet/ wirdt gehacket vnd {{Pagemark|sig|A7r}} gegraben/ mit holtz/ eysen/ fewr vnd stein/ nit allein daß sie diene der notturfft jhrer Kinder/ sonder viel mehr derselbigen zierd vnd wollust. Vnd wenn sie lang gehacket/ gestochen vnd gestossen/ ist sie darumb nit zornig/ sonder viel mehr gütiger/ denn wenn sie von den Kindern ein malter Korn empfangen/ gibt sie jhnen viel malter für eines. Wenn sie in grossen Kriegen vnnd Schlachten mit dem Blut jhrer vnartigen Kinder besudelt/ vnd jre Kinder sich selbst nit begraben/ bedeckt sie die Menschen mit büschen vnd grünem graß.

Die Erde wirdt nit allein in jr angesicht gekratzet/ sonder auch biß ins tieffste durchgraben vnd geboret/ werden in jhren Adern Golt/ Silber/ Zyn/ Eysen/ vnd alle Metallen gesuchet/ Damit eines Menschen finger mit Golt vnd Edelgestein glitzern möchte/ müssen inn der Erden offt viel finger zerrieben/ vnd voller staub werden. Noch wirdt die Erde hiedurch auch nit vngedültig/ sonder zeiget den Menschen nit allein jhr heimliche vnd verborgene schätze an Golt/ Silber/ vnd anderen gläntzenden Metallen vnd Edelgesteinen/ Sonder das noch viel mehr ist/ sie hat in jhrem schoß viel heimliche verborgene kalckofen/ durch welche die wassergeng nit allein erwermet/ sonder auch mit vnterschiedlichen Metallen ferbet vnd tingiert/ wirfft einen hie/ den anderen dort herauß/ gibt jedem sonderliche kräffte/ also/ daß ein Brunn den hitzigen/ der ander den kalten gebrechen zu hülff komme.

{{Pagemark|sig|A7v}} Ob nun einer sagen wolt/ daß das Erdtreich viel Gifft herfür bringe/ dadurch die Menschen beschädigt werden/ dem antworte ich/ daß erstlich viel Gifft von der Erden verborgen/ welches die menschen selbst herfür kratzen. Zum andern hat das Erdtreich die gifftigen Kreuter nicht darumb herfür bracht/ daß ein Mensch den andern damit solt beschedigen/ sonder viel mehr/ daß man auß den Gifften wider die schwerlichsten kranckheiten/ die heylsamesten Artzneien machen solt.

Dann jedermeniglich bekennt/ daß auß giftigen dingen die köstlichsten artzneien bereytet werden. Jst also das Gifft von Gott nit darumb geschaffen/ wie Plinius{{Index|Name|Pliny}} meynet/ daß ein Mensch in langwirigen vnd vnheylsamen kranckheyten/ damit sein leben sol verkürtzen/ vnd jhm damit der marter abhelffen. Wie dann etliche gefangene thun/ daß sie nit ein herteren vnd schendlichern tod leiden dörffen. Werden auch die Gifft derhalben in den teutschen Kreuterbüchern darumb nit gemeldet. Jst also die Erde nit zubeschüldigen von wegen der gifftigen Kreuter. Sondern wir sollen vns selbst beschüldigen/ Dann wenn wir Menschen wider Gott nit hetten gesündigt/ würde die Lufft nicht gifftig seyn/ vnd die Erde kein gifftige Thier vnd Kreuter herfürbringen. Olaus Gotus{{Index|Name|Olaus Gotus}} schreibt/ daß in Jßlandt{{Index|Place|Island}} vier wunderbarliche Brunnen gefunden werden/ vnter welchen einer alle ding so man darein wirfft/ in steine verwandelt/ doch also/ daß {{Pagemark|sig|A8r}} die form vnd gestalt eines jeden dings bleibe/ der ander aber voll süsses wassers/ lieblich wie honig zu trincken. Paracelsus{{Index|Name|Paracelsus}} schreibet/ daß in Vngerlandt ein Brunne gefunden werde/ welcher eysen in kupffer verwandele/ vmb das er hat die natur des Kupfferwassers/ Aber in der warheyt/ wenn jemand die wercke vnd schöpffung Gottes fleissig bedencket/ muß er bekennen/ daß in Ewer G[naden] Landschafft das Erdreich vil grössere wunderwerck erzeigen.

Dann was vermag der einig süsse Brunn in Jßland{{Index|Place|Island}} gegen so viel schöner lieblicher Weinreben/ so in E[uer] G[naden] Landtschafft auß den steinigen Bergen wachsen/ denn Syrach selber sagt: Was ist des Menschen leben on Wein? Was vermag ein wudnerbarlicher Brunn in Eißlandt/ gegen soviel heylsamer Brunnen in E[uer] G[naden] Statt Wißbaden/{{Index|Place|Wiesbaden}} welche viel krancke Cörper in gesunde Leichnam verwandlen. E[uer] G[naden] ist on mein schreiben bekannt/ daß dieselbigen Brunnen nit allein von denen/ so jhr krafft versuchet/ in gantzer teutscher Nation gepriesen vnd gerhümbt gemacht/ sonder auch durch vieler hochgelehrten vnd berhümptesten Artzten schrifften in Lateinischer Sprach der gantzen Christenheyt kunth vnnd offenbar gemacht. Vnter welchen erstlich der fürtrefflich Leonhartus Fuchsius/{{Index|Name|Leonhard Fuchs}} der Vniuersitet Tübingen/{{Index|Name|Tübingen}} verordneter Artz seliger/ E[uer] G[naden] Brunnen dieses gezeugnis gibt/ daß sie die verstarreten Senadern vnnd alle Glieder/ so durch kelte jre wirckung verloren/ wider- {{Pagemark|sig|A8v}} umb erwermen/ vnd in jhre vbung bringen/ alle vnreinigkeyt der haut reynigen vnd seubern. Der weitberhümpt Guintherius Andernacus{{Index|Name|Johann Winter von Andernach}} noch im leben zu Straßburg/{{Index|Place|Straßburg}} dessen rath viel hohe Fürstliche Potentaten vnd Könige pflegen/ gibt E[uer] G[naden] Brunnen ein solch herrlich gezeugnis/ wenn sie in fässern geschöpfft/ vnd gekület getruncken/ heylsam befunden werden/ denen/ welche einen kurtzen vnd engen Athem haben/ die nit wol harnen künnen/ die da wassersüchtig seyn/ das Zipperlein vnd das Podagram haben/ daß sie denen Weibern helffen/ welche die kalte Beermutter vnd weisse Flüsse haben/ werden von demselbigen genannt Marciate/ spricht/ daß sie allein den Cholericis/ das ist/ den Menschen von hitziger Complexion zuwider seyn/ vnd in jhnen ein grossen durst erwecken.

Sie kommen alle darinn vberein/ daß sie mit Schwefel vnd Salpeter tingiert vnd geferbet. Jn dem Schwefel aber ist ein solche verborgene krafft/ das Theophrastus Paracelsus{{Index|Name|Paracelsus}} schreibt/ daß on seine erkenntniß keiner ein Philosophus oder Artzt seyn mag/ Denn wenn er künstlich mit Myrren/ mit Aloe eptaica/ vnd Orientalischem Saffran gepülffert vnd gemenget/ vnnd nach Paracelsi{{Index|Name|Paracelsus}} lehr mit Vitriol oder Salpeter sublimiert vnd bereytet/ ist er ein edler Balsam/ vnd die beste bewarung wider die pestilentz vnd verfaulung/ vnd heylet außwendig alle grindt/ die innwendig jhren vrsprung haben/ wirt auch nicht vergeblich in Wein gebrauchet.

{{Pagemark|sig|B1r}} Ja das noch mehr ist/ so hat der fleissige Mann Conradus Gesnerus{{Index|Name|Conrad Gessner}} seliger gedechtniß gemerckt/ daß auch der Heydnisch Scribent vnd Naturkündiger Plinius/{{Index|Name|Pliny}} E[uer] G[naden] Brunnen gedacht hat. Dann auß allen vmbstendigkeyten kan bewiesen werden/ daß E[uer] G[naden] Brunnen dieselbigen seyn/ welche Plinius im 31. Buch/ im andern cap[itel] Mattiacos fontes nennet. Dann Plinius sagt/ daß sie gelegen in Teutschlandt vber dem Rhein/{{Index|Place|Rhein}} sagt grosse ding von jrer grossen hitz. Dann erstlich ist offenbar/ daß sie gantz nahe am Rhein im Rinckaw{{Index|Place|Rheingau}} gelegen. Dann die Landschafft Rinckaw jren Namen hat von dem berümpten Wasser des Rheins/ vnd einem Griechischen wörtlein/ welches souiel heißt als Erd. So ist auch in E[uer] G[naden] stadt{{Index|Place|Wiesbaden}} ein Brunn von solcher hitz/ daß er nicht allein die Eyer besser/ dann einig fewrig wasser seud/ Sonder auch alle Ther so darinn geworffen/ der massen durch seine hitz kahl macht/ daß sie weder haar noch federn behalten. Was vermag gegen solchem wunderwerck der Brunn in Vngerlandt/{{Index|Place|Ungarn}} der Eysen in Kupffer verwandelt. Die Kunst ist jetzt in Teutschlandt so hoch kommen/ daß viel solche wasser machen künnen/ dadurch sie Eysen in Kupffer/ vnd Bley in Quecksilber verwandeln.

Da die kalten Eißlender{{Index|Place|Island}} in Winterzeit wenn der tag am kürtzsten ist/ 21. stunden vnd 45. min[uten] müssen in der finsterniß sitzen/ vnd bey jnen der tag nicht lenger denn zweo stunden vnd ein viertheil einer stunden. Jst E[uer] G[naden] Landtschafft in vergleichung mit andern {{Pagemark|sig|B1v}} örtern der welt/ also gelegen/ daß die lengste nacht nicht lenger ist denn 16. stunden 11. mi[nuten] vnd 4. secunden. Dann die Hochgelehrten Mathematici Erasmus Reinoldus{{Index|Name|Erasmus Reinhold}} seliger Professor der Vniuersitet Wittenberg/ vnd Gemma Frisius{{Index|Name|Rainer Gemma Frisius}} so Lector dieser kunst zu Löuen{{Index|Place|Löwen}} gewesen/ schreiben/ daß die höhe des Nortsternen vber der Begräbniß Drusi/{{Index|Name|Nero Claudius Drusus}} oder vber die Churfürstliche Statt vnd Vniuersitet Mentz{{Index|Place|Mainz}} sey 50. grad vnd 18. mi[nuten]. Da in Winterzeit am kürtzesten tag die Sonn vber Eißlandt in jrer mittägigen höhe allein 2. grad vnd 2. mi[nuten] erhöhet vber den Horizont/ vnd von jrem hauptpunct 87. grad vnd 58. min[uten] erweitert/ ist sie im Steinbock noch 16 grad 14. mi[nuten] vber E[uer] G[naden] Horizont erhöhet. Jm Sommer aber 63. grad vnd 10. mi[nuten] allein 26. grad vnd 50. mi[nuten] von E[uer] G[naden] Hauptpuncten erweitert. Dann E[uer] G[naden] Landschafft von den Mathematicis der Vniuersitet Wittemberg gesetzet wirdt im siebenden Climate durch Podolien{{Index|Place|Podolien}} vnd klein Tartarien/{{Index|Place|Tatarien}} da Jßlandt{{Index|Place|Island}} im achtzehenden Climate vnd 40. Da die armen Eißlender im glauben jrrig vnd meynen/ daß in Winters zeit wenn das kalt eyß acht Monat lang rings vmb der Jnsel fleußt/ jrer verstorbenen Freunde seelen im eyß kirren/ oder in der klufft des bergs Hecla sitzen vnd heulen/ Seind E[uer] G[naden] Vnterthanen auß Gottes wort dessen bericht/ daß die Gleubigen nach diesem leben/ kein marter vnnd pein haben/ sonder durch den Todt ins Leben gehen. Diese comparation oder vergleichung G[räfliche] H[oheit] hab ich nicht derhalben eingefürt/ als künd E[uer] G[naden] Landtschafft auch nicht mit den Jndianischen vnd Arabischen Landen verglichen werden/ sondern daß ich {{Pagemark|sig|B2v}} wunderwerck gegen wunderwerck hab setzen wöllen. Hab hiemit wöllen anzeigen/ daß es sich nicht vbel schicke/ daß dises Büchlein/ welches von erlengerung des menschlichen lebens handelt/ solchem Herren dedicirt würde/ des Landtschafft vmb erlengerung des lebens/ von vielen Nationen besucht wirdt. Andere loben Arabien von wegen der köstlichen Mummien/ so von dannen gebracht wirt.

Jn diesem Büchlein aber wirt angezeigt/ daß in E[uer] G[naden] Vnterthanen hünerheußlein/ auch ein köstlich Thyriac gefunden/ dadurch alle gifft von menschen vnten vnd oben angetrieben werden. jst derhalben an E[uer] G[naden] mein vnerthenigest bitt/ die wölle jhr/ als ein liebhaber guter künsten/ solche meine arbeit gnediglich lassen gefallen/ vnd von einem Studioso/ als ein vereherung zu glückseligem newen jar in danck annemen. Solchs in allwegen mit meinem geringen dienst gegen E[uer] G[naden] zuuerschulden/ will ich allzeit willig vnd vngespart mich finden lassen. Geben zu Franckfort am Meyn/ &c. To the Noble Lord Balthasar, Count of Nassau, Lord of Jtstein and Wißbaden, etc., my gracious Lord,

Dioscorides Anazarbeus, gracious Lord, one of the oldest and most renowned Greek physicians, has among other books he has written on medicine, also compiled special remedies and antidotes, not only against the bites and stings of poisonous animals but also against various poisons that a person may ingest in food and drink. And although the simple and mixed oil from scorpions, which is attributed to John of Damascus, the Thyriac of Andromachus, and the medicine of Mithridates against poison are highly praised, they cannot be obtained by everyone in all places at a low cost. Therefore, it is considered useful and good by many to translate these remedies of Dioscorides into German for everyone's benefit since they can be easily obtained and prepared by anyone (in case of emergency).

Often, it happens that a person is poisoned and does not know which poison caused it, whether it was arsenic, lead white, silver nitrate, mercury, wolfsbane, henbane, water hemlock, poison hemlock, mandrake, monkshood, nightshade, yew, or deadly nightshade. Sometimes even the doctor himself cannot distinguish which poison it was, so how can an unlearned person know whether they have eaten gold beetles, toadstools, or fly agarics? They do not argue about what poison it was, but they would like to be helped. Therefore, I have attached to the book of Dioscorides the precious and highly valued remedy which is general and very useful against all kinds of poison and which was attributed to the highly learned Dr. Joannes Moibanus of Augsburg.

However, gracious lord, I ask that Your Grace kindly hear the reason for dedicating this booklet to Your Grace. Since God Almighty has deemed Your Grace worthy to rule over that city and territory more than other princes and lords of the German nation, where so many healing springs flow, which have been blessed by Him without any earthly fire made by human hands, and remove the ailments and illnesses of many people, I thought it fitting that such healing remedies should come to light under Your Grace's protection, as they serve to prolong human life, for which reason Your Grace's springs are visited by many people from distant places.

Gracious lord, when we diligently consider the wondrous works of the Creator, we must acknowledge that the pagan writer Pliny has considered many things well, as in the second book of the histories of the world, he compares the four elements with one another and proves that no element is as friendly, pleasant, and loyal to humans as the element of earth. For we must acknowledge that often much rain, hail, snow, and water come from the element of water, which not only floods the fruits of the earth but also often drowns cattle, houses, and people in great numbers. Through the air, often thousands of people are poisoned in a short time, all of whom perish as if they had never been here. Justinus writes in the sixth book that in the year 3533 after the creation of the world, there was an exceedingly great plague in all of Greece, in which the air was so poisoned that people's hands and feet, heads and arms rotted away and fell off, and those who recovered from the disease were so forgetful that they no longer recognized their own friends.

Through fire, often beautiful towns and villages are burned with livestock and people in one night that have not been built for many years, it is a terrible image of eternal fire, where all the wicked will be burned endlessly, it is like a visible death. But with the lovely element of earth, it is created much differently, for it is our mother, as the scripture says, that we come from the earth, and as soon as she has given birth to us, she carries us as long as we live, feeds us, gives us food and drink, brings forth not only grain for bread, beautiful and lovely herbs and all kinds of fruit for eating, flax, wool, and fur for clothing, many animals for food, but also all kinds of roots, herbs, flowers, gum, ore, and other things for health and medicine. She loves humans so much that she does not take in the snake that, as Pliny says, has fatally bitten a human. Indeed, when she is drenched with human blood, she gives the blood such a loud voice that it is heard by God in heaven.

When humans are abandoned by all the elements and have had friendship with all of them terminated, the earth takes humans back into her bosom as her beloved child, covers them up so that they will not be left to the dogs and pigs. It is the common resting place where rich and poor, lords and subjects must rest. Indeed, she carries the human's gravestone and epitaph, maintains his memory so that his virtues will not be forgotten.

The earth is a patient mother; she endures that she is scratched, hacked, and dug by her children, with wood, iron, fire, and stone, not only to serve their needs but also for their adornment and pleasure. And when she has been hacked, stabbed, and beaten for a long time, she is not angry, but much more kind, for when she receives a measure of grain from her children, she gives them many measures for one. When she is besmirched with the blood of her unnatural children in great wars and battles, and her children do not bury themselves, she covers people with bushes and green grass.

The Earth is not only scratched on its surface but also dug and bored into its depths. Gold, silver, zinc, iron, and all metals are sought in its veins. To make a person's fingers shine with gold and precious stones, often many fingers are ground down and covered in dust in the Earth. Yet, the Earth is not impatient through this, but rather shows humans not only its hidden treasures of gold, silver, and other glittering metals and precious stones. But what is even more, it has many hidden and secret calcination ovens in its womb, through which water is not only heated but also colored and tinted with various metals, throwing one here and the other out there, giving each unique properties, so that one well can help with hot maladies and another with cold ones.

Now if someone were to say that the Earth brings forth much poison, which harms people, I would answer that firstly much poison is hidden in the Earth, which people themselves dig out. Secondly, the Earth has not brought forth poisonous plants so that one person might harm another with them, but rather so that the most beneficial medicines could be made from the poisons against the most difficult illnesses.

Everyone acknowledges that from poisonous things the most valuable medicines are prepared. Therefore, poison was not created by God, as Pliny suggests, to shorten a person's life in long-lasting and incurable illnesses, and to alleviate their suffering. It is the same as what some prisoners do to avoid a harsh and shameful death. That is why the German herb books do not mention poisons. Therefore, the earth cannot be blamed for poisonous plants. Rather, we should blame ourselves. If we had not sinned against God, the air would not be poisonous, and the earth would not produce poisonous animals and plants. Olaus Gotus writes that in Iceland, four wonderful springs are found, one of which turns everything thrown into it into stone while retaining the shape of the object. The other spring contains sweet water that is as pleasant to drink as honey. Paracelsus writes that in Hungary, a well is found that transforms iron into copper because it has the nature of copper water. However, in reality, anyone who diligently contemplates God's works and creation must acknowledge that in Your Grace's region, the earth exhibits much greater wonders.

Then what can a single sweet spring in Iceland do against so many beautiful and lovely grapevines growing in Your Grace's lands, for Sirach himself says: "What is human life without wine?" What can a miraculous spring in Iceland do against so many beneficial springs in Your Grace's town of Wiesbaden, which transform many sick bodies into healthy ones? Your Grace is well aware, even without my writing, that these springs are not only praised and renowned throughout the entire German nation by those who have experienced their power, but also revealed and made known to the whole Christian world through the writings of many highly learned and famous physicians in Latin. Among them, first and foremost, the distinguished Leonhart Fuchs, a physician appointed at the University of Tübingen, gives this testimony about Your Grace's springs: that they warm up and invigorate all stiff veins and limbs that have lost their function due to cold, and cleanse and purify all impurities from the skin. The widely renowned Guintherius Andernacus, still alive in Strasbourg, whose advice many high princely potentates and kings seek, gives Your Grace's springs such a glorious testimony that when they are scooped up into barrels and drunk cold, they are found to be beneficial to those who have shortness of breath, cannot urinate properly, are suffering from dropsy, gout, or help women who have a cold womb and white discharge, and are called Marciate, which means that they are only detrimental to choleric people, that is, people with a hot temperament, and awaken a great thirst in them.

They all agree that they are tinged and colored with sulfur and saltpeter. In sulfur, however, there is such a hidden power that Theophrastus Paracelsus writes that no one can be a philosopher or physician without his knowledge. For when it is skillfully mixed and compounded with myrrh, with aloe eptaica, and with oriental saffron, and then sublimated and prepared with vitriol or saltpeter according to Paracelsus' teachings, it is a noble balm and the best protection against pestilence and putrefaction, and it heals all external sores that have their origin internally. It is also not used in wine in vain.

Moreover, the diligent man Conrad Gessner of blessed memory noticed that even the pagan writer and naturalist Pliny mentioned your Grace's well. From all circumstances it can be proven that your Grace's well is the one that Pliny calls "Mattiacos fontes" in the 31st book, in the second chapter. For Pliny says that they are located in Germany above the Rhine and speaks highly of their great heat. Firstly, it is clear that they are located very close to the Rhine in Rinckaw. Then, the region Rinckaw has its name from the famous water of the Rhine and a Greek word which means "earth". In your Grace's city there is also a well of such heat that it not only boils eggs better than any fiery water, but also any animal thrown into it is made bald by its heat, losing both hair and feathers. What can compare to such a wonder as the well in Hungary that turns iron into copper? The art has now advanced in Germany to such an extent that many can make such water that turns iron into copper and lead into mercury.

In winter time, when the day is shortest, the cold Icelanders must sit in darkness for 21 hours and 45 minutes, and their day is not longer than two hours and a quarter. Compared to other places in the world, your Grace's territory is located so that the longest night is not longer than 16 hours, 11 minutes, and 4 seconds. The highly learned mathematicians Erasmus Reinhold, late professor at the University of Wittenberg, and Gemma Frisius, who lectured in this subject at the University of Leuven, write that the height of the North Star above the burial place of Drusus or above the electoral city and university of Mainz is 50 degrees and 18 minutes, although Appianus sets it at ten minutes less.

Therefore, your Grace's subjects often have to make bread from dried fish, where God provides them with bread that nourishes both the body and the soul abundantly.

Iceland is surrounded by water in the middle of the sea, and people can only come there by boats, but only for four months of the year, and with great danger not only from the rocky cliffs but also from the whales that the sailors must chase away from their ships with trumpets and horns, which they bring from Hamburg, Lübeck, and Amsterdam. Your Grace's land is located on solid ground that can be reached not only on foot, by wagon or horse but also near the river, where the most famous rivers of Germany, the Main, lose their name and give the city of Mainz its name, where upper and lower Germany are separated by the famous river Rhine, which used to separate the Roman Empire and Germany. What is the use of the Icelandic Count's highness that their mountain Hecla spews out fire and stones, while they have to live underground during the winter and build their houses from fishbones?

As for the poor Icelanders who believe that in winter, when the cold ice surrounds the island for eight months, the souls of their deceased loved ones are trapped in the ice or sit and howl in the caves of Mount Hecla, your Grace's subjects, according to God's word, know that believers do not suffer torment or pain after this life, but rather pass through death into life. I did not make this comparison to suggest that your Grace's territory can be compared to Indian or Arabian lands, but rather to set miracle against miracle.

I wanted to show that it is not inappropriate for this booklet, which deals with the extension of human life, to be dedicated to a lord whose territory, visited by many nations, is known for its means of prolonging life. Others praise Arabia for its precious mummies, which are brought from there.

In this booklet, it is revealed that your Grace's subjects have henhouses and a precious theriac, which drives away all poisons from humans, from above and below. It is therefore my humble request to your Grace to graciously accept my work as a lover of good arts, and to receive it as a tribute from a student in thanks for a happy new year.
