I. Basic information

Printing History, Manuscripts. One manuscript.

Editions. Not edited by Huser. Edited by Sudhoff in Paracelsus-Handschriften (1899), 47–48, and in Paracelsus, Sämtliche Werke, I/10: appendix, 681–681.

Relationship between different versions. Only one version known.

Structure, genre/form, perspective, style. A medical advice for the Augsburg citizen Bernhard Rechlinger, directly addressing the recipient. This may refer to Bernhard Rehlinger (ca. 1477–1537) or his son Bernhard Rehlinger (ca. 1502–1572).

Relationship to other texts.

Authenticity, authorship. While Sudhoff in 1899 still thought that it was “very well possible” that the Consilium originated from Paracelsus, he stated in 1928: “whether it may really be attributed to Paracelsus has become quite doubtful to me.” Benzenhöfer accepted Sudhoff’s judgment characterizing Sudhoff’s reasons, however, as “unclear”.

Time of writing. Probably written in 1536/37 while Paracelsus stayed in Augsburg (if authentic).
