Nach dem Studium in Basel und Tübingen, dann in Frankreich (Montpellier) und Oberitalien folgte B. – nach ärztlichen Tätigkeiten in Lyon, Genf und Basel – 1571 einer Berufung des Herzogs Friedrich I. von Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard). Dort in Mömpelgard legte er einen der ersten botanischen Gärten nördlich der Alpen an und verfaßte botanologische Standardwerke, darunter die monumentale <i>Historia plantarum universalis nova et absolutissima</i> (gedruckt Yverdon 1650–51) mit Beschreibungen von über 5000 Pflanzen. Außerdem trat B. mit einer Pestschrift (übersetzt von Th. Noblot, Mömpelgard 1597) und einem <i>Artzney- und Badbuch</i> (übersetzt von D. Förter, Stuttgart 1602/03) hervor. </br> Croll muß in Mömpelgard/Montbéliard mehrfach mit B. zusammengetroffen sein und bekundet seine B. geltende Verehrung. – Aus dem Crollkreis kannte B. * M. Sebizius, der zeitweilig an B.s (und J. Daléchamps’) <i>Historia generalis plantarum</i> (1586/87) mitgearbeitet hatte (Künkele, 1987, S. 259 f.), und * J. Robin, der 1586 von B. in Paris in botanicis aufgesucht worden ist (Reeds, 1991, S. 233). | |||
